Disaster - lost my only key!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Disaster - lost my only key!

Post by Menophanes »

A few weeks ago I posted an enquiry about obtaining an additional (non-remote) key. This problem has suddenly moved into another dimension, since while shopping yesterday I lost the key - the only one I have. The car is stranded in an unlit and unsupervised car-park, waiting to be clamped, vandalised or both. I understand, from the answers to my previous posting, that there is some possibility of obtaining a key through Timpsons provided I can produce the VIN. The difficulty here is that I have not got a separate note of this; it is on the V5, of course, but the V5 is inside the car! The only proofs I have got are an insurance certificate and the 'New Keeper' section from the previous V5.

My immediate question, then: - Is there any means, online or otherwise, of getting hold of the VIN? I have just wasted £20 on an 'Autocheck' which told me nothing.

Laugh if you must! I realise the temptation may be irresistible.

Less of a panic than I thought. I have been able to order a transponder key from the local (Penryn, Cornwall) branch of Hawkins on the strength of the registration number alone, without needing the VIN.

I still have to decide what to do with the car during the week or so that may intervene before the key is ready - but that is really nobody's problem but mine.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Glad you got to order a key :D

For future reference...the vin number is in the bottom left hand corner of your windscreen and can be viewed through the screen.

Hi, yes a new 'Transponder' chipped key can be obtained from Timpsons for £25 ~ No remote. BUT, that does not help you as you and them need your original key to have the blank blade cut. Incidentally you do not need to show any proof of ownership. Seems your only recourse is going to be a Peugeot Dealer and that i am afraid is going to cost you ! Plus it is not an over the counter while you wait thing. If you are in th AA, RAC, Green Flag etc you may be able to get them to tow your car back to your home or to your nearest Peugeot dealers.
