I was saddled with CC debt from 2006 to 2013, not massive, peaking at £3K but normally hovvering just below £1K almost all the time with me paying over the minimum payment but around £50/60 per month. Basically I was getting nowhere whatsoever; spend 6 months paying £300.00 off only to add £500.00 in unexpected bills (normally car repairs) at the same time I was hitting the bottom of the overdraft every month.

My money trouble began when her indoors was off work on the sick for 6 months, ANY spending over the limit went on the Card (sometimes food shopping too).

In 2012 I registered with the Money Saving Expert forum and reclaimed all my PPi costs and bagged £1,100.00 within 4 weeks :cheesy: paid off the C Card and haven't touched it since. I hated the Card and what it represented (i.e. me having to spend money I didn't have, but not out of greed, but necessity) but I could never ever find any more money to pay it off especially with rising living costs AND trying to keep the overdraft in check - it was a real balancing act, and sh*t.

The point? just worth checking your PPi, you may have had some that can be reclaimed now.

Talking of saving money, I've stopped smoking altogether now, having spent very little in the last year on cigarettes (averaging about 1.5 per day) and even less replacing it with vaping. The main driver being that I can vape at my desk instead of having to go outside, but being able to get my nicotine fix in the car without having to open the window to let the cold/wind in, and without it stinking is a huge bonus.

By my reckoning I saved about £2000 last year, will save £2600 this year and £3000 next, going up to around £10,000/yr by 2025 if prices continue to rise as they've been doing recently  . I'm now spending about £25/yr on nicotine, £20/yr on flavourings, and about £100 on hardware as well as decreasing my risk of cancer and improving my health to boot 8)

We even drove to Belgium last weekend to buy the wife's baccy, saving around £600 for the year. She's still resistant to the idea of vaping, and that shopping trip means she's stocked up so it'll be some time before I can turn her :( Was a nice day out though.

Smoking is expensive, and it's going to get much, much worse in coming years. Get vaping, find flavours you like, and learn how to mix your own liquid before it becomes over-regulated (no flavours other than 'tobacco' and 'menthol') and taxed to buggery! Avoid anything that looks like a real cigarette though; those things are utter crap!

Over the long term, I'm cutting down my nicotine intake very gradually with the hope that one day I'll no longer be addicted. Governments absolutely does not want that to happen (as evidenced by bannings of 'lite' cigarettes and attempts to regulate e-liquid with just one fixed strength option), but mixing my own means I've been able to cut the strength of my liquid from 18% (equivalent to a normal fag) to 13.5% so far. Last time I smoked a real one, it nearly blew my head off and tasted foul, so I guess I'm on the right track :)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

*** joins the queue.

Just had a dose of the letting agents getting snotty because I won't have the gas man let himself into my home while I'm not there
I'm waiting on being able to sell share options that I took instead of salary about 4 years ago.
Life would have been a lot nicer with the salary
A small batch of options paid for the 407 and started a pension.
The big batch of options is for a house... if we don't go bust first and if the price goes up a bit.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I have a ton of debts from student days that I am trying to pay off along with credit cards, which I am hoping to do within two years. Went a bit crazy in my 20's :( Was lucky enough to get a 95% mortgage in 2006 (they were giving them out to the homeless back then). In 2010, the ex's parents contributed (a lot) to the deposit, so wasn't an issue there either to get a mortgage.

Looking to eventually sell these and buy a nice big one with the current missus. We both have some savings and are on decent enough salaries to get something. But not until I pay off my debts.....

The thing I am most surprised about in the UK is the different attitude to lending...

Here, it is common to get a mortgage on 10% deposit. House prices in Sydney are astronomically expensive with the average hovering around the 600k AUD mark or 327,000 quid according to the currency converter. The reality is, 600k won't get you a whole lot close to the city and is more indicative of a 2br apartment...

Average wage is rather high here, but so is the cost of living. We are looking at buying a place sooner rather than later. Trying to save a solid deposit as your money is often cheaper than using the banks - especially over a 30yr period!

Good luck!

Welly, I feel your pain.
I too have been really strugling since the wife was made redundant in Feb 2011 when our second son was 16 months old,
she was on 25k a year before tax so losing £1200 a month has been more than a little hard.
We had built up a life around our combined income  , not alot we can do about it we've cut back as much as we can,
but on the last reconing we've run up about 6k in three years. But I suposse that's not bad when we are 60k down in three years after tax :( .
Just hope she find's a job when our youngest starts full time school in Aug.

B.T.W Sam congratulations for you & your good lady.
We all hope your luck run's better than some of ours, but as they say ( Nothing good comes easy ) :) DDD.

Boiler is a combi not long fitted!

Think my Gran has offered to pay for a survey.
I'm not too worried as like you say the mortgage company will check all that!

Only fault any of us could find is that it has an old Wylex rewirable fuseboard but I've already got it's replacement in the form of a metal clad Schneider single phase board with individual RCBO's 8)
