Absolute bliss!

Post by Bailes1992 »

I've just done a 10 month stint working 100 miles a way from home. I was averaging around 1000miles on a typical working week.
This usually involves getting up at 4:30am, leaving at 5am to be in work for 7am. Leaving work at 7pm and getting home at 9pm.
In all fairness the Mondeo has been great! Other than the bearing in the tensioner on the auxiliary belt which failed a few weeks ago it's been faultless and now showing 132,500miles
I've just looked at all my fuel logs and over the past 12 months it's averaged 67.8mpg 8)
I'd also like to say that anyone who says diesel oil goes black straight away needs to see mine! I've done 2,000miles on the oil that's in there currently and it's still totally clear! :supafrisk:

I'm now working a measly 20miles away
I got up at 6ish this morning. Left my house at 6:30am and got to work for 7:05am. Total bliss! :cheesy:

It's not been too bad. You soon get into a routine.

As standard the car was only getting around 40-45mpg. The only reason I get such good economy now is down to having all the emissions nonsense removed.
Since March last year my car has had an oil change every 6 weeks. I've never seen such clean oil on a diesel.

12 hr days, 100 miles away, don't some of the other lads lodge down there in the week? do you get paid expenses for the mileage?

Interesting about the oil, that must only be down to the EGR removal?

Good Fuel results

Best I ever managed back in the days of my Mondeo diesel was 51mpg - driving like miss daisy as well - combo of A roads & M/ways

Mind you I used to change my car (co.) when they reached 10K so probably never saw the benefits

And they were the hardest 10K a car's ever done right? :supafrisk:

My Cousin what werks for that there Ford gets a new motor every 3 months  I see him probably once a year or so and the conversation's always the same:

"oh is that a new motor there?"

"err, which one did I have last time and I'll fill you in on the others"

I'm assuming the clean oil is down to the EGR, such frequent changes and the fact the car now runs so efficiently.

I wish I had the LPG conversion done before I started working away, it'd have paid for itself by now!
Shame it was only 3 weeks ago I finally found someone I trust to do it, and now I've bought a house I can't afford it

Unfortunately our traveling expenses work as the crow flies from the office Cardiff. Therefore if I'm working in Somerset for example I only get paid 20miles! Absolutely disgusting but nothing I can do about it.
To travel my 100miles I get £9.70 traveling expenses and £5.30 travelling time. I also have a TAG for the Severn bridge.
I get exactly the same money on the new job in Swansea even though it's only 20miles.

The frequent oil changes have been great as I've been able to try different oils and viscosities.
I've tried 0w30 fully synth, 5w30 semi & fully synth, 5w40 fully synth and 10w40 semi synth.
The car seemed quieter and smoother on 5w40 and 10w40. The car is a bit more responsive on 5w30 and 0w30.
I also noticed significantly faster cranking when the engine was cold using 0w30 which was interesting.
I think sticking to the Ford approved 5w30 is definitely the best compromise but it's nice to know I can expand my horizons when I'm buying oil and get myself a better deal.

Those expenses seem a bit light, doesn't really help with the motoring costs does it?

Those expenses are a joke. How can they expense something on as the crow flies - you're neither a crow, nor do you fly! I take real-life mileages between customers' sites or, at the very least, a Google Maps estimate.

Things are changing with the company I work for and it looks like we'll be working all over the country in the near future.
In which case we'll be putting our foot down and making them get us a few vans because it's not fair to do this sort of mileage in our own cars!

Even if we lodge away though we only get £35 per night. What on earth can you get for £35 a night? :frown:

Why am I thinking we're only a few posts away from a Monty Python sketch? Hang on let's cut straight to it, shall we?

"We used to live in this tiny old tumbledown house wi' great big holes in t'roof"
"House? You were lucky to have a house!..."
