Whistling turbo

Hi everyone,

Is it normal for the turbo to whistle on my 2.2 hdi executive? the garage i got it from said they put a new one on the car before i got it.

Yes they do that. Some more than others but it appears to bear no relation to the health (or otherwise) of the turbo.

Both of my 2.2 HDis have very audible turbos, and the estate is on 211,000 miles and there's nothing wrong with it :D

Don't worry about it would be my advice!

it could be a lose or burst pipe but as above rely

The Turbo's on the HDi's do whistle, I'd be more worried if it stopped doing it.

I don't know why they changed the turbo, we've never heard of any 'failures' on this forum. There's been one or two turbos changed in error though.

The turbo is just in front of the Bulkhead (behind the engine) so quite near the driver, you'll also hear it much more when driving past builings/walls where the noise bounces back at you.

If it's really loud, just get a Subaru badge from ebay and stick it on the boot - nobody'll think anything about it. Also works if your exhaust is blowing or has fallen off... :lol:

i can't hear the turbo at all on my 2.0hdi, but i had a passat that had a really load whistle and was told by loads of people it was knackered it went on to 200k and was still going strong and it was remapped.
i've had loads of turbo d cars and some have made a noise and some haven't .#

My current HDi isn't as loud as my previous one, but I do like the sound of it.

Would like to make it whistle a bit more without losing boost though.
