20 years ago is a place? Give me a one-way ticket, stat!

As I keep saying to t'wife, there's only one person who speaks like that and she's German! (Well, actually, she's not that German, she's far more Scottish than she is German. Her kids, on the other hand, are much more German than she is, thanks to the wonders of interbreeding)

May even be true if you eventually have a time machine. Paradoxically, the converse may not be untrue.

I'm confused, going to lie down......

I feel more like I've slipped down the wrong trouser of time here :frown:

The thing I always wondered about with time machines is: Do you need to move in time and space? I mean, the Earth rotates, right? So if you go back, say, 20 hours, would you actually end up somewhere in Russia yesterday? Also, the Sun moves too, so if you could indeed go back 20 years would you end up, err, hold on, errr, 338342400000km away? That'd be right interesting that would. Briefly.

That's a good point steve.
So if I go 3 months back but fix my position relative to the current location of my chair, then I'd end up in space.
And wouldn't there be some small discrepancy in time because of the relativistic 'personal clock' thing?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Well yes, I guess. As you're sitting in your chair you are actually rotating around the centre of the Earth at 460 m/s, which is orbiting the Sun at 30,000m/s, which is orbiting the centre of The Milky Way at 330,000m/s, which is moving towards what's known as "The Great Attractor" at 1,000,000m/s. Relativity states that the faster you move, the slower your personal clock runs relatively to a stationary observer, so if you could send yourself 3 months into the past you'd actually find yourself, umm, ASPHYXIATING IN THE VACUUM OF SPACE and far, far too busy to look at your watch

Did we wander off topic a little here?

Well, you could go through all the bother of inventing a time machine but it would be much easier to delete the posts from where it started going wrong...

[The Dwarfers acquire a time travel device, testing it out by sending the ship to the year 1421]
Rimmer: Give us visual. Let's see what it's like out there.
Lister: Okay, punching it up.
[They see nothing but empty space]
Lister: Hey, I don't get it! We're still where we were!
Kryten: Of course. We're still in deep space, sir, only now we're in deep space in the 15th century. Isn't it wonderful?
Rimmer: So we're still three million years away from Earth?
Kryten: Well, yes.
Lister: [Sighs] Taking her back to the present.
Kryten: Keyed in. Engage.
[They go forward in time]
Rimmer: So forgive me if I'm being thicker than the offspring of a village idiot and a TV weather girl, but what was the point of that little exercise? Fun though it was drinking in the heady medieval atmosphere of Pre-Renaissance deep space, the drive is next to useless, yes?
