What is this part?

It's ticking loudly and like mad when the car is running. It's on a 1999 2.0 16v petrol. The car does have some idle issues and was wondering if this could be related to the issues.

Don't think it should be as loud as it is at the moment.

it's my understanding that it's a valve which lets air into the fuel tank to stop a vacuum forming
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

It allows fuel vapours to go into the fuel tank,

They're stored there until they can safely be transferred back to the engine to be burned with the normal air-fuel mixture.

A charcoal canister is much bigger than that normally. Fuel vapour from the tank is 'trapped' it in the canister (so the car doesn't stink of fuel like they did in the old days) when the engine's started it recovers the vapour and burns it off through the intake fannimold. That device looks like the purge control valve or something you could swap it with one from a scrapper to see if the noise stops?

You will find replacing the purge valve will do nothing ..if this car is running rough,

ive not heard one yet that dont tap and tick and ive had a fair few petrol pugs. they is what they is, close bonnet and ignore it :D

there is a few threads somewhere on here on this iirc,

That's just the electrical valve. The filter canister is fitted under the plastic inner wing protector. It is on Coupes, anyway!
No 1 on here, with no.5 being the electrovalve in question.
