DW10 crankcase breather

Hi all,
Where is it on my engine, I'm gona be doing a oil change with oil & fuel filter soon along with a egr delete & air doser delete.
I am also thinking about removing the inlet manifold at the same time to clean it out & I wanted the clean out or replace the crankcase breather at the same time
My reasoning for this is because, it was a common problem for them to block up on the 320d that we owned (to the point that BMW said to change them every 12k).
This caused the oil to be forced through the turbo & intercooler & into the engine (you would get blue smoke if ideling for a 10mins or so).
Well I have noticed quite a bit of oil in my intercooler & pipes

Crankcase breather is on the cam cover at the front (the pipe in the middle about an inch or more in diameter) there is an arrow marked on the cam cover giving the direction of flow.

On the BMW's (especially the 6-cylinder Diesels) there's a crankcase breather Filter which blocks and causes trouble but isn't something that's normally replaced at the BMW service intervals (what we made a mistake? noooooo, shall we change this guys ATF? oh wait what are we saying?)......

Oil in the IC is ok on the HDi and as far as I know the Breathing system is very reliable and simple i.e it can't really block up.

Cleaning the inlet fannimould will be interesting to see though, I'd be very interested in that as I don't recall anyone having done this. My bet is that it's partially blocked with soot, throttle response and turbo pick up will be greatly improved once clean.

Our's was great when de-flaped & properly looked after
ie: oil changes every 6k with forte flush, breather changed every 12k along with air & fuel filter.
Oh & shell v-power + forte diesel treatment to stop varible gerometry vains sticking

All manufactures have there problems ie: silly service intervals, cambelt intervals 120k or ten years oh & fap / com2000 / dodgy electrics

Oh yes indeed, they all have their issues, even cars that supposedly don't. Sometimes they even make the news (e.g. Toyota's throttle issues) and sometimes they don't (e.g. Mercedes' similar throttle issues, kept that one quiet didn't they?)

Pug swirl flaps don't fall off, but if they did, they're bigger than the inlet port they control anyway. Naturellement!

Oil always weeps past the turbo seals which over time fills the pipes and the intercooler with oil. Nothing to worry about!


I cleaned the inlet manifold out and blanked off the EGR valve on my Mondeo and it made a huge difference to performance, drivability and economy!
Shoulda seen the crap I had out the inlet though!
