I probably only use the breaker bar and the impact on a regular basis but the others are just so handy to have around.
Had to retap the block on the other halfs KA when I changed the gearbox last time!

+1 to the Halfords kit. Got it for Christmas from the wife-to-be and it's brilliant.

Whilst I agree with you on the snap-on quality, I cannot justify the cost for occasional use

If I was making my living with them

As I said my ratchet combination set cost £39.99 down from £79.99

I've just checked out snap-on's web site, RRP for the equivalent set is £371

Re: I can haz Ratshit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
I had a Halford's jack for about 25 years, eventually it wore out and almost dropped my D9 but I think I can't say I didn't get my money's worth. I also have a Halford's socket set, bought that about 15 years ago. Not that I'd assume the quality would be the same now though...
I wouldn't say ratchet ring spanners were a substitute for sockets, normal rings yes, but there's a lot of stuff that I wouldn't be able to get to without a ratshit. And what about a torque wrench?

They dont make things like they used to as'pose,
the trolley jack from halford's. for home use, has done around 9lifts, now when you raise the car with it, after 10-15 secounds it starts going down,
and this aint done any hard graft, Mainly used for my wifes small car,
they are junk,
seems theyve been tat for awhile,

Re: I can has Ratchit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
Most of what I've read about Halford trolley jacks has been quite good.
I've got a couple of trolleys. A budget £25 Silverline, that I keep in the boot.
( I would have bought a £19.95 Lidl, but the Silverline was blue, the Lidl red, and red jacks
are so common. )
And also a scruffy, ancient one, can't see the brand but going by the green paint colour, think it may be
a Japanese/Taiwanese Kamasa.
They both do their job. But very obviously the Kamasa was not a budget jack.
All round more substantial construction, tidier welds, bigger saddle,
and quicker lift.

Re: I can has Ratchit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
i like the halfords pro kit , it's nowhere near as good as snapon but for a home mechanic it's pretty good stuff with lifetime guarantee apart from the ratchet, i split a socket hammering on a mangled nut and they changed it no questions asked.
i also busted the ratchet internals which aren't covered but at least they keep repair kits and the are not expensive.

Re: I can has Ratchit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
I use facom at work and others use snap on, mac etc. One of the lads uses gear wrench which sem like good value for money. Mine are all reversable 72 tooth with 15deg head. The fine ratchet may seem pointless but when access is tight theyre a life saver. Unfortunatley for me all my work stuff is sae so no good for home use.

Holy sh*t I need loads of kit after reading what you lot have
Is there a Tesco Value trolley jack?
I think this is mainly why I've always shoved my car over to my mechanic when it needs work as it's cheaper than me buying all the kit I would need.
Cheers for all the advice all, very useful.

Re: I can has Ratchit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
I always thought that instead of giving the moneys to the mechanic, I'd use it to buy the tools, then I'd have the tools for next time etc, big savings in the long run.Welly wrote:I think this is mainly why I've always shoved my car over to my mechanic when it needs work as it's cheaper than me buying all the kit I would need.
Re: I can has Ratchit ring Spannaz instead ov sokits
My methodology is research what you need for a specific job, weigh up the cost of additional tools needed and whether you're likely to use them again against paying a garage to do the job.
Obviously this assumes you have the basics...spanners, sockets, jack, stands and alike
Being a 2 car family and doing servicing and basic jobs for family members it doesn't take long to build up a reasonable tool kit.
I found a web site that I use when researching stuff on the 406 which is very useful called '406.oc.uk', give it a Google
