Vegetable Oil in Diesels

Post by trufflehunt »

Some years ago I owned a 1980's Mercedes 240D. Those old Mercs have the reputation that you could
put almost anything in the tank, and they'd still fire up. Chip fat.., paraffin..

I played it safe, and just used supermarket ( :| ) cooking oil. Typically I'd have about 30 - 40% veggie
in there. I only had the car about 6 months from a March to a September. Never had any problems at all.

Aside from the lovely smell, what I particularly noticed was that with the veggie.., the diesel clatter
seemed to smooth out to almost nothing.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this experience, or has experimented with small amounts of vegetable oil
in HDI's to smooth things out? Or does the HDI not like vegetable oil being added to the tank?

BIG NO! on a HDI, I believe that applies to any diesel running high pressure injection systems.
The 1.9 XUD is fine on 100% in the summer months, 50/50 in the winter.

Indeed, you will wreck the high pressure fuel pump. I'd not advise trying it!
