Started off by making a wierd Diesel clattery noise like the fueling was out and slightly hesitant, then about 200 yards down the road it just cut out whilst cruising along at 2000RPM.
I had a look because I was worried that the bottom pulley had gone and snapped the cambelt (waiting to have that done you see). Everything looked OK so I gingerly tried the starter again and it wouldn't go.
I could hear the Lift Pump so that was OK, tried another start and it fired up!!
But now I have the Check Engine Light on, for the third time in 1 year of owning it
So, back to my mechanic it will have to go.
I was surpised that whatever it was that through up the fault stopped the engine dead in it's tracks
Welly, (officialy pissed off)

As much as I hate to say this but my Puggy has become unreliable I can now say that I would have reservations taking the car on a long, and important, journey (of which I have one coming up in two weeks )
What a pisser.

I wonder what my car is worth to sell? £2,000.00 ?
That's twice as much as I paid for mine, which is not far off hitting 170k
If mine died tomorrow and I somehow had the money to replace it, I'd really be torn between a turbo and a 110+ diseasel. Definitely D8 though; they seem to be a lot less prone to strange failures. The turbo's a lot worse off in the running costs department, being a petrol and all, but it does have a decent pair of legs when you put the pedal to the metal (and sub-10mpg to match! )
And it'd be an estate. 406 estates are truly barges, but the rear visibility (and wiper!) is gorgeous
noooooo
get it mended and keep it.
Itll be fine. ;)
Agree with you about all the new crap on newer diesels. My old 306 TD wasnt problem free but always simple to solve. The only thing I couldnt mend was the smashed front end from someone pulling out in front of me.
Whenever the 406 has a problem. It has to go down the garage.
ill swap welton
from the syptoms you have, i hate to say it but all i can think of is HP pump, though it could be the cam angle sensor or the crank angle sensor, but thinking about it, it wouldnt cut out if the cam angle sensor died, only if the crank angle sensor died, also if this had a poor reading it would feel like static pump timing is out, have you still got the car welton, you could check the crank angle sensor yourself and save yourself alot of money

Not as mad as it sounds. i'm convinced, that whilst they're not as cutting edge, they're better painted, with ebtter quality materials througout, better quality trim, just generally better built. A clean D8 is a good car indeed, and often at a bargain price.
This morning, the Engine Check Light went out! and all is well
My mechanic said crank angle sensor when I called him. This sensor will tell the ECU that the engine is NOT running and shuts everything down, like it did do. Only once you restart it does the sensor liven up again.
I hope it's not the HP pump FFS please.
Got to wait till next Thursday to find out
