406 speedo issues

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 speedo issues

Post by ben5732 »

Heya all first post so bear with me :)
Recently got the other half a 406 to learn to drive in a 2.1td. Clocks started playing up which i re soldered and then decided to work ish abet showing the wrong speed by around 40mph over. Whilst taking it apart again to sort the needle position (it came off during working on it) suddenly everything died on it, fuel temp rpm and speedo also now the power steering seems alot heavier at slower speeds if thats anything to do with it. Bulbs still work on the speedo including the ones that come from the second cable that controls the gauges etc. Would it be the speedo control unit thats now also gone? Also where can i get hold of one if so? Cheers :)

Welcome aboard matey,
Thats a big old barge for a learner car :cheesy:
Not sure about the heavy steering, I believe some models have variable but no idea if that applies to D8's and probably only execs but may be wrong. My SE doesn't have it or if it does it doesn't work.
I would say speed sensor is unlikely if all your gauges have died.
I may be inclined to take the clocks out again and check the two big connectors are seated properly with no bent pins and no wires got pinched when fitting them last time.
Maybe re-examine the solder and check nothing came lose, been a while since I did my D8 clocks so can't remember the specifics but there is a good how to on here with pics (somewhere).

Hi there yes they have speed sensitive steering and it could be the little black box under the glove box that controls all of it it has a brown top on it

It appears to have said box. my guess is somehow I've fried the box whilst attempting to repair the clocks :/ I'm guessing Peugeot for the box itself however I cannot find a set of clocks that match the car anywhere. Would it be possible to use clocks from a slightly newer model? seen a YouTube video of someone who's done it but no idea if it's just a straight swap or if I'll have to botch some wires up. Definitely a big car to learn in but she seems to find a larger car easier to drive and the insurance was unbelievably cheap once I was added onto it (600 fully comp once she passes her test even less before so) ment to be taking her car to silverstone next month to watch the wec to save on juice but unless I can get it sorted I'll have to take my thirsty thing :(

Well you learn something new every day
I have owned a D8 GLX a D8 LX and now a D9 SE and I never noticed any difference in the weight of the steering at any speed in any car.
Note to self...
Pay more attention!!!

Where abouts are you located Ben? maybe someone local could cast an eye

If memory serves there is a ribbon cable to the odometer on D8 clocks, it should be possible to take the odometer from your old clocks and fit it in a replacement set and keep the mileage accurate.
Never tried it but I remember thinking at the time it would be fairly straightforward to do.
