Noisey clutch

Hi All, It's awhile since I posted as all things were running fine till today. Well its a 99 406 hdi on 137000 miles or so as the clock says. Today the clutch pedal stayed down and I had to pull it up with my shoe and since then there is a terrible squeak / screech from the clutch. I know its from the clutch because when you press the clutch its worse. Would it be the clutch release bearing. The other thing of late it was getting difficult to select a gear from start. There is a slight screech from the car when its standing and in neutral.

My release bearing made a kind of wooshing noise when it went, much louder when the clutch pedal was pressed.

Is it easier to get into gear with the engine off? Does it crunch going into reverse?

When I depress the clutch pedal fully there is no noise but when I let the clutch off either in gear or out of gear the noise occurs at about half clutch. No difference getting geasr when car is off and noise is in reverse. Has a 99 110bhp got the dmf ?

Don't quote me on this but I think a D8 HDi doesn't, a D9 HDi does.

Definitely sounds like a release bearing problem.

Only done D9 110 clutches which have all been dual mass, like Steve, i'm not sure about D8.

Sorry my mistake for not giving proper description. Its a 1999 D9 vin no: VF38BRHZE80865464. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the first of the d9's had solid flywheels.

808xxxxx it's a D9, not really an early one either as it's about 3 months in. The never wrong (haha) Service Box says it has a DMF

The big question is do I attempt it myself or get someone to do it. I have done clutches before on tractors but not cars and don't know anything about these dual mass things. I would normally do all repairs but a bit sceptical about this one. I might enquire around and see how much, over here they usually look for an arm and a leg along with loads of cash for a job like that but I will enquire.

250 euro which is about 200 stg for labour only. Parts will be extra, he was saying to change the clutch to a solid flywheel type. Should I change as suggested.

I have decided to do the clutch myself. I had a look at Jaspers post in base articles and the one with all the photos - sorry for not knowing the poste. Its a bit of work but the experience will come in handy for a next time. I have two questions.
1. Does anyone know if a flywheel off a 1.9 TD 1997 will fit the Hdi as I have access to a free one. I suspect not as there is no flywheel sensor on the 1.9 TD
2. Has the flywheel senor to be set to anything when you remove the flywheel.

I have got all the parts to change the clutch to a solid flywheel type. The only bit I am unsure of is " do I have to reset the flywheel sensor to anything". I will start tomorrow and hopefully finish on Monday.

Just be careful not to damage the crank sensor above the flywheel, it might be a good idea to remove it so not to damage it on refitting the gearbox.

I had a look at mjb's well documented and photographed article in knowledge base articles and he removed the flywheel sensor out of the way. I will also be following Jasper,s how to do a clutch change. Do I have to do any timing or setting with the flywheel sensor after I replace the flywheel.

Nothing to set, no timing to worry about.

You don't need to completely remove the subframe on your car, just lower it enough for the gearbox to clear.
