Yay. Cambelt done.

Post by Quinny »

At last. :cheesy:

Eventually got the car in yesterday to have it done, after I purchased the parts some weeks ago. So now she's adorned with the belt, water pump, crank oil seal, idler, tensioner and bottom pulley.

When I bought her she had 109k on her, and now she has 114k on and despite writing to the previous owner to find out what had been done earlier, (Who failed to write back. :x ) I thought it was time to address the issue. The wife will also be happy, as it means that I can now park on the drive without dripping oil all over. (Once I've pressure washed the underside.)

Farmed it out to my local garage, as I was going into hospital for a day procedure, and as we were going in the Wife's Xsara HDi, the timing was perfect.

Cost? £180.

That's a fair price for a 4-5 hour job, I bit the builet last year & did mine myself.
Took me 6 hours but I was being carefull as I hadn't done one of these car's before , nice feeling saving myself over £200. 8)
Parts about £125 for timing belt kit (Gates), water pump (circoli), oat anti freeze, skf drive belt tensioner & a genuine crank seal :D .
The local pug place wanted £358  .
Glad you've got it done thou, worth every penny for the piece of mind :D

I need to put my prices up!

I don't charge anything like £180 labour to do one of these.

3 hour or less job for me.

Jasper even the mobile mechanic round our way charges £45 an hour, so if like you say 3 hours then £60 an hour I supose is quite high for a indy.
But to be honist I do all my own servicing so I woulodn't really know  .

I wish I could charge £45 an hour!

I would never get away with that round these parts :frown:

Super competitive round here, dozens of garages and the like, even the main dealers will try to compare prices!
I recently did a short service and mot on a Honda Jazz for £130 inclusive of mot....the local dealer wrote to the customer with an offer of £99 including mot and a years RAC cover included  I saw the letter, fortunately for me the customer has been with me for 30 years plus and wouldn't go anywhere else.
I lost a job recently on a Corsa, the woman went to Vauxhall with my estimate and matched it!

wow! you should move to Edinburgh as here prices much higher and to find good garage is a lottery, wrong move and you can end up leaving your car for weeks. Gearbox conversion cost me £300 , thats the lowest of 5, 2 were £450 +vat other 2 didn't even bothered to take job in with all parts and info what needs to be done supplied [emoji53]
