1996 406 not starting

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

1996 406 not starting

Post by 406owner2 »

Hi

Please can anyone help, when i turn the starter i only hear a clicking noise, the engine does not crank over at all, i tried a few times turning the ignition on, but now it even does not make a clicking noise, battery is fully charged, is it the starter And is the starter hard to service if it is the starter ?

Sorry to hear that, knowing what engine you have may help get more responses.

Some more details would help but for a general assessment I would think that either the battery needs replacing or has poor connections, or the starter motor is faulty.

Thank you for the responses !
It's the EW12 petrol engine, battery and terminals is fine, is it hard to remove the starter without jacking the car ?

I think you will find the starter motor is difficult to get at, you need to remove the air filter box and the inlet manifold, the starter is hidden under the throttle body if I remember.

The starter is held on by 3 bolts 2 x 8mm allen bolts with the other carrying the engine earth which has to be removed first before you can undo the 16mm spanner size bolt.
There are 2 electrical connections...1 x 13mm nut and 1 x 8 or 10mm nut.

Disconnect the battery before you start the job.

Thanks Jasper,

I am 85% sure it's the starter, just to be even more sure, if i hear a clicking noise and it is not the battery, will it most likely be the starter,
sometimes the clicking noise stops altogether and i hear absolutely nothing when i try to start the car.

wrt it's position i had a peek inside the car and can see what i think is a throttle cable ? and my guess is the starter is beneath that cable from what it seems. i will go undo the air filter box solong.

Maybe a chance to wheel this out again: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12037&hilit=suspect ... or#p106350 (note warnings about breaking starter by hitting it)

Ok so looks like the airbox is relatively easy to remove, just unclips sort of and i need to remove one pipe, i tried putting it in gear and rocking the car, the clicking noise returned after i rocked the car in gear so that i guess tells me it is the starter that is the problem, i wonder if it would make it work if i put the car in gear and actually roll the car a few feet if i could overcome the pressure of the gears to make it roll ? But anyway i figure the starter needs to be fixed or replaced at the end of the day, so i guess i'll have to pull it..

2.0 litre 16 valve engine?

If so as I said earlier, you have to remove the inlet manifold and the air box to get at it, there is very little room to get at the starter motor on the 16 valve petrol engine.
It's location is to the left of the air box and under the pipes of the inlet manifold....the right hand ones.....you can barely see it without the air box out and only just when it is.
