What is it about 406s?

Well: my second was definitely better than my first. Doggy is clearly happy with his decision.
Jonsowman is on his second, and IIRC Alex's 140 was his second.
...

I'm on number 7 now.....

The parts for your current one could be sourced a little cheaper, i think my flywheel was £204 and the clutch was £94, still not cheap and fitting is the killer.....

The local one sound like a nice potential but it's then just the wrench of losing the old one, 125k on a nice example does sound good though and at the price..... why have you not bought it yet? :)

Where is this oil leak that necessitates removing the gearbox? I can only assume it the crankshaft seal, dripping oil from the bottom of the bellhousing?

Buy the low miler - swap bits over - sell on your old one

I have to drive passed my old 1.9 every day and it is a wrench to see a car I really enjoyed owning in someone elses hands but you need to think with your wallet sometimes.

Personally I'd buy the replacement and run it 'as is' for a month (if space/funds allow) if it proves to be a good solid car then start to swap bits, if not you should be able to turn a profit on it which will help towards the repair on the old one. Bare in mind I sold a tidyish 96 1.9 LX for £500 to the first guy that saw it and had to turn down at least 10 prospective buyers and still wish I'd asked for more money!!!

Out of curiosoty why the need for a brake servo change?

Not sure why it needs a brake servo, but the current owner has some documentation from a garage stating so, plus it needs aux belt and bits, exhaust is blowing between cat and fap etc.
Nothing serious, just niggly bits. I'll try to get a test drive soon to make sure all is okay first.

'blowing between cat & fap' sounds like some herbert has already tried to 'cure' the FAP issue perhaps?

Faulty brake servo might transpire to be someone's attempt to fault find the vacuum system?

I'd grab it - you can always sell it on if need be.

The reason I ask about the brake servo is my brakes were pretty poor and the servo was one of the suspects, however cleaning up the sliders and fixing a pretty serious leak in the vac pipe sorted it out a treat . It also fixed the anti polution fault which I believe was a lack of vac pressure when the swirl actuator tried to engage at the magic 2100 RPM..
You could well find that stripping out the non-essential spaghetti during the super-tractor makeover cures any braking/Anti polution issues.

I've started to lurk around a bit on another Forum (shock-horror) and it's to do with buying and running old motors (shite as they call them) this is in my quest to buy and tinker with some 80's chod if I get the courage......anyway I have found that the 406 is held in extremely high regard as a cheap but very usable and easy going motor, so much so the 1996 to 1998 D8's quite often get snapped up for surprisingly more than first envisaged.

Carry on.

Well, after much deliberation - I have bought a new car.
It does need a few things wrong with it, such as;

Its China Blue.. ( kidding ), New passenger door, air bag fault, passenger window held up by wood, no Sat-Nav or CC, floppy comms and my god its slow, proper slow.

Under the bonnet I can see a poor quality import MAF, and a swirl rod that only moves 2mm when revved, and the EGR is intact - so that is probably whats wrong.

However, it was £400 :cheesy:

Watch this space, I will do a new thread regarding progress when I collect the car on Saturday.

Well done that man!

I've got 2 broken comm2000's if you want one to send for repair, (you can always give another ropey one back at some point).

Puzzled on the lack of cruze, is it a GLX ?

You can't go far wrong at £400.

There must be so many 2.2 HDi'ers what visit garages to be told it needs a whole new eggsauce and special fuel syrup and a special reset-o-meter at many pounds £££££££££ who then scrap the thing or sell it cheap.........

.......but we have the answer.......

In 2011 a crack commando unit was sent to VOSA for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the East Midlands underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the DEFAP Team.

Tell me about it... Despite the fact I do really like my bimmer, I still miss two of my 406s - the '97 exec turbo estate P126ONO (scrapped)

and my precious precious V6 coupé V811HAE (in Poland I think)

Funnily enough I couldn't give a damn about the saloons (tubby, v6) or the hdi90 estate though.

Buy the China blue one anyway, the colour will grow on you. If you don't like it, chuck it on eBay or something and hopefully gather around £500 profit if you are lucky (Don't know the UK market that well). Use that money to fix up your current one. It will be like you re-did yours for cheap OR you end up with a nice coloured 406 :P.

Basically, get it anyway, THEN decide whether you want to replace or sell :)
