Can a front wheel drive wheel bearing properly be done at home, i.e. without a press, or massive sockets?
I have the 106's front strut and it needs a wheel bearing, i got the old wheel bearing out of the old damaged strut (the steering arm was bent away off in the accident) after a lot of hammering and trying what i could with sockets and threaded bar i got it out, but i dont think the same technique would be able to get it back in without breaking it.
The replacement strut off ebay has a slight bit of play in the bearing, the seller says this will not be an issue once installed and everything is tightened up, the only thing is that the old bearing didn't have any play in it at all, although perhaps it could have been distorted slightly when hit thus wedging it in solid?

Hi
ive done bearing for year's with no press,so yes it can be done,
Tbh its not worth the hastle, get a garage to press it out,
you need a good vice, lump hammer .& old sockets as a drift,
use old bearing to drift new bearing in,
sometimes you have to use angle grinder too as bearing face stays put,.
This shouid only be done at home if no garages near by,

Re: Front wheel drive wheel bearing
Iwas breaking up an old citroen xsara once,
dont know if it was by luck or not imanaged to get the hub face to come off withought removing the strut,
this was with drive shaft nut removed mind,
if you give the hub some levarge the bearings collapse and front face comes off,
you wouid still have to remove bearing carrier to get at the bearing retainer circlip, Anyone here tried prizing one of them out with a screwdriver?,pfft what
a p.i.t.a,
iguess if you had some metal knocking around to make a frame/ and an old trolley jack for its ram you couid knock up a bearing press,

Re: Front wheel drive wheel bearing
If you run a ring of weld metal around the inside of the bearing it will shrink and you can prise it out with a couple of screwdrivers.

Havent tried with bearings, but with bushes I put them in the freezer a couple days before installing them. Then just knock them in with a hammer.

This is known as the Jeremy Clarkson approach.TheSongRemainsTheSame wrote:Then just knock them in with a hammer.
