Insurance company Audit

My youngest son is 17 years old and passed his test a few months ago, we took out car insurance for him, in his own name/own car etc and he has his elder brother on as a named driver, all is done properly and legally IE: he is main driver and there are no telematics on this policy.
Now his insurance company have sent him a letter because of an audit saying they want copies of:

Driving licence, both parts both back and front of each

copies of licence for named drivers on the policy ( difficult as he's in Hawaii on honeymoon)

Current utility bill or council tax bill (lives at home with us so no bills)

copy of v5(logbook) all sides so 4 pages.

Any idea's what this is about ?? never heard of this before

Sounds like a load of bollocks to me, have you contacted the company directly? If you do, don't use any of the contact info on the letter get it off their website etc. I've never had to send anything into an insurance company.

+1 it sounds like a scam to me.

Tread carefully - use insurance companys website to contact them and get them to help you with the situation. It maybe legit, but I am naturally suspicious of companies asking for information they already have access too...

Sounds fishy.

Is it on headed paper?
Does the letter give your policy number?
You could call them to ask whether they sent it.

Insurance Co's use the information you give them online or over the phone when you take out the policy and whatever you tell them is legally binding at that time. They will only want copies of the V5 and drivers licence in the event of a claim/payout.

Just ring them up and check I'd say.

I agree with the other guys, sounds like junk mail to me.

I would contact the insurance company directly first.

Son phoned them and it seem's legit, they said not to worry about the utility bill as he lives with parents and they have given an extension for his brothers information as he's on honeymoon. A member on another forum had this for his daughter and thinks its for fraud protection. I think/thought it's because we paid it for him (interest free loan on his part) because it was £3600 one-off or £5700 paid on credit (rip-off or what)

I have a 17 year old lad and he's going to Uni this year. What we're doing is getting him to pass his test (due this August) and then do nothing more. No Car.

When he returns from Uni in 4 years time he'll be 21 and would've been a licence 'holder' for 4 years. Insurance companies work on how long you've had a licence not how long you've been driving he'll then be able to get much more reasonable quotes for his Dad to pay

be cautious as they also asked if he had been a named driver on any policies and whether he had 'used' his licence.As he had only passed his test a couple of weeks before we had to say no he hadnt.If your son hasn't had any policies in his own name or been a named driver on any policies they will see him as a new driver.Also job title seems very important to them as well.

I seem to recall something like that with a mate's wife, she'd passed here test something 10 years back but when she tried to get insurance they loaded her up because she'd never been insured on anything at all before. I'm pretty sure it was way and above not having no no claims too.

I guess if it is true you need to actually insure him on an actual car, maybe yours if it doesn't work out insane or buy some hulk, dump it in the garden, cheapest piece of crap you can find with the cheapest insurance. I guess it'll still cost but if it doesn't need any maintenance or fuel even...
