So indecisive!

Post by Bailes1992 »

So I have some spare money each month. It equates to about £600/m.
So I'm now in a position where I could afford to by myself a new or second car.

In the last 2 weeks I've alomost bought 2 Golfs, a Focus, 2 BMW 3 series and now I'm looking at a 5 year old Suzuki Jimny for a second car.
Every time I go to sign the paperwork I change my mind! :(

My Mothers bought a brand new Jimny and it's a brilliant little car! No good for a daily drive for me but it's one of the most fun things I've every driven and would make a fun second car. They do hold their value though. An 8 year old model will set you back £4,500 and a 5 year old model will cost you £6,500-£7,000!

Everything else I've looked at was to replace my Mondeo. And this is where I struggle. The Mondeo has been a cracking car and I'm very attached to it, as a result I'm reluctant to get rid even though it's going to start costing me money in the near future. It's now got 140,000miles on the clock, it's still on the original clutch, the rear suspension squeeks now and again, there is a faint knock from the front suspension and there is also a few interior rattles driving me utterly wild! BUT I love the way it goes about it's business, it's very comfy, easy to drive, quiet when you pootle around but makes a lovely noise when you put your foot down and it goes like well too! Then there's the fact that on a clear 60-70mph run in good weather it will and has done 75mpg! I can't think of any other car that will geuinley beat that figure!

Yet, I sit here looking for the next car that I decide I want then bottle it last minute.

I think if I had £600 a month spare I'd be looking at leasing something, no worries about depreciation, insurance or servicing costs and a brand new motor every few years.
Potentially for you Sam any mileage clauses may put the mockers on it but might be worth a look.

Pretty sure I saw an RCZ for about £200 a month on the just add fuel deal but I could be wrong.

Like you said issue with leasing is my mileage. That said if I was stacking the miles on it I could swap with my Missus to even it out.

Just been to Vauxhall. I can get a new Astra SRi 1.7 diesel with optional Bluetooth and rear electric windows for £231/m for 5 years 0% APR.

Dunno what to do!

£600 SPARE a month  wow! I understand how this happens though, you both work full time I guess? actually I found some old Building Society savings books last weekend and saw/remembered that me and Mrs Welly used to reliably save £500 a month. It's all turned to sh*t now though.

As soon as you start having kids your finances go down the toilet, I think I'd be tempted to squirrel most of any spare money away for the future....

I should have replaced my car 2 years ago when it was still worth £4.5K I didn't so have sort of missed the boat in upgrading and financing something else. I was so relieved when the finance finished though.

At the moment I'm leading towards ordering a new Astra.
I've pried up an Astra SRi 1.4 Turbo. I've specced it with leather, electric rear windows, DAB, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. That comes in at £22k. After my discount, £2000 deposit contribution and my part ex it works out £230/m for 5 years! All under warrenty for 100k too!

Like others have said, I find the idea of buying a *new* car a bit daft. On a car like that you are paying a premium of £10,000 over a 13 plate.

According to parkers:

Original Price

More info £20,100 £???

Franchised Dealer

More info £11,490 £???

Independent Dealer

More info £10,970 £???

Private Good

More info £10,660 £???

Private Poor

More info £9,315 £???

Part Exchange

More info £10,145

And for someone like yourself who admittedly gets bored / itchy feet with cars 5 years is a loooooooong time to commit.

But at the end of the day, It's your (and your girlfriends) money Sam, you may as well enjoy it.

Not bored of my car at all!
Just think it's getting on a bit now!

There's also the Vauxhall lifetime warrenty to consider! You only get 3yrs/60k if you're the second owner!

True but £10,000 can buy a lot of spare parts for those last 2/3 years :)

Im surprised you are considering Vauxhall, knowing your appreciation of Germanic options. Will the quality / reliability be up to your expectations?

Are you asking for views, or looking for agreement with what you've really already decided to do ?

The one and only car I've ever lease/hired was, as it happens, a Vauxhall Astra. 30 years ago.
I'd got myself a regular partner, taken on a mortgage on a nice little 3-bedroom semi, and, yes, one day
the thought came to me that I really ought to grow up, be sensible, put my immature enthusiasm for fast, and interesting
cars to one side.... and get a nice new Astra hatchback Mk1 1.3 GL.

I'm 43 next month and I've bought and sold quite a few cars privately, including one brand-new one....the excitement of which lasted about 10 days when I realised it was pretty much just like my old car but cost more money.

Cars truly are a money pit and I'm rapidly losing interest in the things, I hate these new range of cars they all look the same, they're all stupidly complex and heavy and we're all made to feel like we should buy into them, as far as I go new cars can FRO unless someone gave me one as a company car then I'd happily abuse the thing.

Property is where the smart money goes in my opinion.

Actually if I were you I'd look at getting an Astra Van (like a 10-reg or something) get the 1.7 engine as that's the most reliable and those things are lovely to drive and sit in the outside lane like a train. Then keep the Mondy. We've ran 1.7's at work for years and they are hard to beat, ours get horribly abused too, easily see 200K out of them.
