Rad fan test - how?
Had planet on the 307 today so thought I'd do the 406 as well and found a fault when testing the cooling fans, can someone give me an idiots guide on how to do it manually on a 2.2 HDI please?
Temps never go over 90 according to the dash but I don't recall ever hearing the fans spin up since I've had the car.

Re: Rad fan test - how?
You should be able to actuate it via PP2k - Actuators Test, should be linked to the engine ecu.
Altenatively, downloading an ecu file seems to do it every time.

Also, put the aircon on and the fans should turn.

Re: Rad fan test - how?
There in lies the problem, Planet gave me an error when I tried to do that and my air con has never worked. I'm now wondering if the fans and air con are one and the same problem?

Re: Rad fan test - how?
Sit with it at 3000RPM until it goes over 90. If the fan doesn't come on then it's buggered.
If the fan wasn't working but had been needed then you should see fault codes. Something like cooling fan rationality check IIRC.

Is that true with the electronic fan? I'm not sure.GingerMagic wrote:Also, put the aircon on and the fans should turn.

Re: Rad fan test - how?
Well, I've tried to put my fans on with PP2000 using the actuators test and the fan wouldn't turn, however when I put aircon on it does - so I think I have dodgy relays......rwb wrote:Sit with it at 3000RPM until it goes over 90. If the fan doesn't come on then it's buggered.![]()

Re: Rad fan test - how?
With semi-mux lectrics, the fan(s) will run at slow speed if the a/c's on. On later cars, the engine ecu manages the engine temperature and condenser pressure by regulating the fan speed. It follows that if your a/c doesn't work, the fan is unlikely to oblige.
When I recently changed my water pump and coolant, I literally spent half an hour trying to get the thermostat to open on a hot day. Fixated as I was on spotting leaks, opening bleed valves and topping up coolant, I failed to realise that the intermittent humming / whirring noise was actually the fan giving the radiator a fleeting blast of air.
This is the only time I've heard the rad fan working on either of my 2.2's, except when downloading an ecu file.

Re: Rad fan test - how?
So would unplugging the connector at the thermostat housing not work like it did on my 1.9 then?

Re: Rad fan test - how?
So just had Planet out again and indeed I have an 'FRIC fault, actual speed different to reference' or something like that. Neither high or low speed worked on the actuator test
Fans spin freely with your finger and all the connectors I can see look ok, next step?
Planet gave lots of checks to do, all of which were complete jibberish to me!

Re: Rad fan test - how?
Here is what I did to fix my similar problem:
Checked the three relays were indeed working when actuated, they are found in the front of the rad under the plastic cover with the logo - Contact cleaner sprayed everywhere.
Checked the connector for the Bitron controller was ok and clean - Contact cleaner sprayed everywhere.
- I have seen others posting problems with a lot of water inside this controller housing. Take it in and dry it, or take it at part and look for busted relays and stuff.
Measured that voltage indeed reached the relays.
Measured that connection for the fan coils were below 10 ohms and not 2M ohms. (My fault was no connection through one (RH) motor = +2M ohms)
Then I knew one motor was gone. But instead of leaving it here and buy a new one, I took of the blade off and knocked on the motor with a hammer while the system was at high speed.
The motor slowly came to life as the sliders in the motor came back in contact with the rotor.
I used this as great help for troubleshooting my problem:

Also remember:
Removing the plug for the (in my case brown) connector for the thermocouple for the Bitron controller on the cooling manifold will make the system start at low speed for 1 sec and then at high speed with the ignition on. (I had only one motor running at high speed)
Turning on the A/C at running engine, will run the fans at low speed. A/C will not run with the thermocouple for the Bitron controller disconnected!
Hope I will be a help for many others, since I have had problems finding a solution online, and others simply just bought the whole lot from a breaker to solve similar problems.

Sorry, typo, mine is a single fan set up.Doggy wrote:Has yours got two? Both of my 2.2's have had a hoooge single one.gumby6371 wrote:Fans spin freely with your finger
Still not working even after swapping the fan but I haven't checked it with Planet yet and got bored waiting for it to get over 90 degrees!
