Inside the MAF, one is a wire ended thermistor the other a tiny heating element but they are very fragile. MAF is in the air hose from the filter, two screws and a plug to remove it.

I use carb cleaner on mine too, but it is very important not to spray too close to avoid damaging the very fine sensors.... 8)

While the MAF is off, spray some WD40 or similar into the air intake with engine running, this will help free off the vanes in the turbo. They are probably fine but may as well give it a squirt while you have clear access....

Okay, cool.

I assumed that the turbo vacuum supply was to open the vanes like on the 2.2Hdi....

Cheers for your replies, I will report back when I have done it, in the mean time the lack of power has reoccurred a few times
since I cleaned the TPS so I guess it had no effect.

Thanks Steve

At the risk of being a plank how does wd40 help the turbo vanes when they're in the exhaust side of the turbo?

It doesn't, it cleans the MAF sensors.

I use carb cleaner only for the MAF as it is fast drying with no residue.....

I learned this from the VW forums, when the engine is running, squirt WD40 into the inlet between the MAF and the turbo ( I use the breather pipe for access ) and suck on the turbo vac pipe at the same time. This opens and closes the vanes while the WD40 is drawn in, round the turbo and out the exhaust side lubricating the whole of the inside of the turbo - no need to rev the engine while doing this.

Does it work? No idea but I do it from time to time anyway..... :cheesy:
