Juddering @ 30 mph in 4th gear
Hi
I have just bought a 53 plate Peugeot 406 hdi 90bhp.
Really like the car but,
If I try drive the car @ 30-35 mph in 4th gear it judders like mad and wont pull through it.
Drop it into 3rd and its fine.
I have blanked the EGR valve and just changed the MAF sensor.
Blanking the EGR did make it slightly better but The fault is still there.
Any help most appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

When you say juddering do you mean a vibration or an oscillation/kangarooing?
Bosch or Siemens injection?

Re: Juddering @ 30 mph in 4th gear
it could just be the wrong gear for the situation
you don't say if its a flat road or an up hill however small and what engine speed are you at when changing gear
i am not getting at your driving skill or ability as i am in no position to, it seams like a new car to you and they do take a bit of getting use to.

Re: Juddering @ 30 mph in 4th gear
Having driven XMs with the 2.1td engine for over 15 years I do find the 2.0. Hdi not as smooth at low revs, both my 406 and C5 are the same, anything below 1500 rpm and it vibrates, the XM would pull smoothly from tickover, I have to do a lot more gear changing to keep it smooth, I think the 2.1 has a heavier flywheel, that's what it feels like anyway. I have got used to the hdi now and like it for its economy although the XM would do 50mpg+ on a long journey the Hdi will do over 60mpg+

If Daves 53 90 is doing the same as my 03 90 then it's a pain to drive in town and would seem to be incurable.
My local diagnostics guy has had it 'oscillating' while hooked up under test, something is causing the fuelling to fluctuate under certain conditions. I have given up throwing money at it, it's only a car.
My pet theory is a software glitch in the Siemens system. When the car is new, new engine mounts, new clutch drive springs et al, the oscillation is kept under control. But as things go sloppy with age it manifests itself.
Worse in damp weather.

30mph in 4th is around 1250rpm I believe. Could just be transmission snatch.

about 1400, defo not just transmission snatch.

Hdi's wont do 1400 smoothly, the top engine stabilizer can make it worse though.

Have the injector values been checked on PP2000 at different RPMs?

Kangarooing till you change gear and then its fine.
Even if you put your foot down it dosnt stop doing it untill you get to 35mph or above.
Had loads of cars from 950 cc 106 to a 335 bhp impreza, first time i have come across this type of issue.
Cheers

Re: Juddering @ 30 mph in 4th gear
My 2.2 will sit happily in 4th gear at 30mph unless you're going up a reasonable incline but obviously I have a bit more torque to play with.
Bottom engine mount is a good shout and maybe also change the fuel filter as it may be a little starved of fuel at low RPM's if it's not flowing freely.
Might also be worth giving the brakes a look over as a bit of binding might just put enough extra strain to cause an 'I want to stall' judder.

Dave, your symptoms sound just like mine. Is it a Siemens?
If Bosch you may well have a fixable fault.
If Siemens then good luck and let me know if you ever find a cure. (abandon ye all hope)
