Forget the slight ''tickety tickety'' this is a full on smacking/knocking noise

Trouble is I got to wait till Thursday to sort it out I've been driving at no more than 1400 revs today (45MPH in 5th )

She will be laid up all weekend, hopefully I can crawl the 3 miles to work at just over tickover until it's fixed.

The road to work is very nice, but very fast. It's a narrow-ish hilly curvy B road and 80MPH is common.

There is no direct bus and walking or cycling would end in my own death. And if I walked as the crow flies across the fields I would arrive at work smelling like a cows bottom.

I am stealing her indoors car for Tues & Weds and the car goes in the Garage on Thurs.

I have only done 10 miles in this state at NO MORE than 1400 RPM, but mostly at 1200 RPM.

If the cam belt goes on a HDi at low RPM then it will just snap off a Cam Cap, not good but no where near as bad as bending valves.

Am I really this lazy?????

i had a bottom pulley go on my old 405 1.9td and it ripped the keyway out of the crank so i had to have a new engine, it also happened on my fathers 306 1.9td , i was told its a common fault but didnt realise it was that common

Well it's down at the garage (after a very nervous, slow, ride down there).

The new pulley arrived from Peugeot (£128.00) my mechanic refuses to fit an aftermarket pulley and the Puggy one is a modified part or 'improved' so it will never go again.

So I will have the pulley and the mahoosive belt changed too.

Also when he Pulled the car into the workshop the Engine Check Light came on (again) so he can do a code read aswell. I reckon it will be the crank sensor.

Also asked him to have a quick nosy at the Turbo whilst he's down there because it's whistling like a Lorry he's got a couple of ideas on that himself.

So, I will be receive a right royal wallet emptying by the looks of it.

I am now shitting myself about this car

The pulley and new belt are on, now lovely and quiet (apparently) but the ECU code read has flagged up a worrying issue...........

Fuel Pressure

If I'm lucky it will be an intermitant wiring fault, remember the Engine Light turned itself off which can be a good sign of a trivial fault.

If I'm unlucky the HP pump will crap out and seeing as I have a very important and long journey coming up next weekend I will be shitting it for sure.

This aint really what I wanted from my car, I wanted a good honest reliable Puggy.

Hey, there is one thing positive......2 guys came into the Garage today at different times whilst my car was in there, both guys unconnected with each other and both said ''that 406 is in incredible condition'' at least I must be doing something right.

ideally welton you need to have a Diag plugged in and go for a long drive to monitor the fuel pressure, i bet its either a glitch, rail sensor, pressure regulator in the pump, or the lift pump, or most likely, you had a problem earlier this week were it cut out, if it was the crank angle sensor, the injectors wont open and the pump regulator will return fuel to the tank, but it will either do it too much or not enough, and as the HDi engine management has a very poor fault memory, the stupid thing got confused and new there was no fuel pressure as it wasnt allowing any but it still thinks theres a fault

Thanks James. So far all is well, the car is pulling like a train I have never had any lack of power or stuttering.

My mechanic thinks it's just a glitch particularly as the engine light went out by itself and hasn't come back.

I will monitor how things go. The new pulley is nice though

And the car is quieter than evAr, it actually sounds very sweet now.

I've had quite a few cars that have given me hassle in the first 6-12 months, then seem to run fine from then on. I often think it's to do with a different driving style.

I'd go along with that,when I got my latest 406 11months ago,she had been an "in town"car,West London to be more exact, from new (2000) .....,and for a couple of months I swear it was "learning" the completely different driving methods/higher speeds/longer-in-gear/less braking/etc etc associated with an "out-of-town" owner.At first the Auto changes were not at all where i expected them to be,and all sorts of things,but 11 months on she's settled down nicely....,I swear she almost smiles now with the chrome grille trim on! Dohhhh!
