Stinky Diesel fuel pumps

Post by Welly »

Just filled up with Tesco's finest Momentum Unleaded, enjoying the clean delivery and light fragrance of the liquid fuel and knowing that should I spill a tiny drop it would evaporate and leave no trace but inadvertently brushed the back of my hand against the filthy oily Black diesel hose, you know the one that lorries and agricultural equipment use.....

Now my hand smells of this horrid oily residue, can't we get these things banned or something? or have a back street place where diesel buyers can go in the hours of darkness?

I always find Tesco pumps to be utterly stinking to the extent I now refuse to fill up my Dads car because that's the only place he'll take it! They never have any gloves either.
Never had the same issue with BP, Shell, Gulf, Texaco etc etc. They're always spotless!

Since everyone knows supermarket diesel will wreck you engine and halve your mpg, I appear to have a spotlessly clean pump at my local Asda reserved for my personal use. :cheesy:

Mind you the truck pump I was forced to use at a Shell garage just of the M1 at the weekend was a disgrace, (but at least it didn't have a low overhead canopy to avoid).

I am literally a bit surprised that you fill up at ASDA, I'd have thought you were one of those anti-supermarket fuel types. I mustard mitt my mechanic ALWAYS goes on about how you shouldn't use the supermarket petrol but her indoors' Astra has been fed on that stuff for 6 years exclusively on Sainsberries basic UL and we've had no trouble with the running, no misfires, and the emissions are always spot-on.....go figure? althoughhhh I can stop it pinking by using Shell Super Unleaded but don't care enough about it to worry so....

I've always considered Petrol to be petrol where ever you go.

Diesel on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. I think I have an underlying problem with the Mondeo in the form of a sticky fuel pressure sensor or regulator. Biodiesel lubricates less than standard diesel. When I use a diesel that contains 7% Biodiesel I get this funny pulsating/jerking when I try to accelerate in 6th gear from motorway speeds. It's only for a second or two but it always makes my heart skip a beat.
I tend to stick to BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power as you are garunteed a low biodiesel content.

I was talking to a fleet manager the other day who works for a large UK company. He said that they changed their cars and vans at 5 years old. Everyone with company cars and vans had BP fuel cards and they had very few issues with diesels. They then changed to another fuel card that was more widely accepted and after a few months issues with EGRs, injectors, fuel pumps etc had more than doubled!

Diesel doesn't smell too bad, sometimes I fill our home heating oil into 30L containers and bring them back home in the boot of the car, that stuff is absolutely disgusting, and the smell clings on for longer than diesel.
LPG is quite an unpleasant smell aswell, and tends to give you frostbite when removing the filler.

I have used supermarket fuel for the last for the last 30 years and about 3/4 million miles and never had a problem, the only time I did was when I had my own tank and the rain was leaking in.

The worst smelling fuel I've come across is jet fuel, it's a kerosene derivative and trying to get the smell of it off your skin and out of your clothes is a downright pita. I've had overalls still stinking after several washes and you think you've got yourself clean until you get a bit sweaty and then the stench comes right back. Orrible stuff [emoji49] diesel smells like roses in comparison

don't mind heating oil, half pint of hydraulic oil to every gallon, car runs perfect.
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer

The only difference between supermarket and 'branded' fuels are the additives. Supermarket fuel tends not to have any additives, whereas 'branded' fuels will have additives supposedly for better starting, cleaner running, better economy etc. Personally, I have never felt the benefits of these additives. I tend to buy Shell or Esso as they are cheaper than BP, but the supermarkets are always full of queueing vehicles, so not worth the hassle, as well as the fact that I have never seen a clean dry pump handle. (I have been to them as passenger in other's cars.)

Speaking of the pump handle has anyone ever worked out how you do that 'thing' where you can lock the handle open and do a hands-free fill up? or am I dreaming that? I'm sure there is (or was) a metal clip you can flick over to catch the handle?
