The Mondeo isn't going anywhere guys!
I want to get some work done on it over Christmas. An LPG install would pay for itself in 6 months. So i use the 406 for 6 months while I got some bits and bobs done on the Mondeo and then if use the V6 for the weekends. 8)

Struggling to find one though. I've found a new saloons but no estates. :frown:

If I really really really like the 406 and it's costing me less then 14p a mile to run then the Mondeo may have to go!

By my maths you'd need to average around 23MPG for sub 14p a mile at 70p/litre for LPG, 43MPG on petrol!
You may have to drive it relatively carefully to do that and what's the point in that???

I do 20-30k a year mainly motorway mileage so I think 25-30mpg would be realistic!

But il get one and see what happens!

Taking it easy on a long run, I know some of the Coupe V6 (J4S) manuals get ~35mpg

I hear what your both saying but I can't help thinking a 2.2 super tractor would be a better choice, probably easier to get hold of in the estate as well.
My saloon can do 35 round town with a heavy foot and 50 plus on a motorway, modifications are well documented and inexpensive as they mainly involve removing things and not adding them.
LPG will need testing and signing off even if you can do the work yourself.

Just giving my 2 penneth as I personally wouldn't by a 3 litre car to drive it economically.

Young Sam has experienced climbing a certain hill in Gloucestershire in a 2.2 estate, so I guess he's knows what they're like. :supafrisk:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I think though some of you are missing the point. It's probably only going to be a daily for 6 months or so, then it'll probably be a weekend toy. If I do really take a shine to it and it does seem to be reliable then I may consider getting rid of the Mondeo.

As Doggy says, I know what a 2.2 is like and they are extremely impressive! Huge power band and loads of torque.
I'm hankering after more than 4 cylinders though, I like the noise and I miss the responsiveness of a petrol engine. There's also far more simplicity! There's no DMF, no expensive injectors and no turbo! If it's going to be a weekend toy then simplicity is a must!

You also have to consider a decent 2002-2004 2.2HDi is probably going £500-£1000 more than a 2002-2004 3.0 V6 to buy! Consider an LPG conversion done by someone who comes well recommended with decent quality parts will set you back £1200 then it doesn't seem that silly to opt for a V6 and get it converted.

I've had a V6 before. It was a saloon and an Auto and it would do 25mpg on a fast motorway run so I think a manual would be a little better. I don't plan on driving it economically but back and fore work I tend to do 60-70mph.

At the end of the day it rests on weather or not I can find a decent V6 Estate. I've been looking for about a fortnight and not come across one which is a bit of a shame!

I was also looking a V6 a while back the sound of a v6 being the main reason and the lag free instant acceleration would also be nice.
I havent seen an estate in a while the odd saloon pops up now and then, this is on auto trader at the moment.

70k miles on any 406 is quite low.
