Insurance Policy Gripe...

Post by GingerMagic »

I received my renewal price through the post yesterday, OMG..

I have been with Admiral Insurance for a number of years now and have found the service to be good - even though the premium sneaks up a bit every year, a simple phone call to said insurance brings it down to a better price.

This year, I was flabbergasted. Insurance last year for my 406 and the wifes Picasso was around £550 for both with a Multicar policy - this year it has risen slightly to £985  really!!??? They even got the details wrong and put me as the driver of the Picasso ( as if  ) and my wife driving my car ( only when I'm 'relaxed' by cider  ) and they conveniently forgot to insure us both for Commuting, which could have been tricky..

Went on tinternet - got the 406 insured for both of us to drive for £242, and the Picasso for us both to drive with breakdown cover included, £244. This is a saving of pretty much £400.....

Needless to say I am no longer with the boat themed 'multicar is cheaper' my arse Insurance people 8)

Similar thing a couple of years back when my insurance renewal more than doubled for no apparant reason, I gave them a ring and got a load af flannel about a general rise on insurance costs..blah..blah
They then gave me an offer of only double my previous years premium !!!

Needless to say I declined, compared a few meerkats and got the same level of cover for £50 less than the year before

I have been with my insurer for eight years now, and every year it is the same. Premium comes through the post, I phone them, get put through to Customer Relations, and I pay the same as last year. Except for this year. Premium came through the post, and it was £20 less than last year! That was back in March. I had changed from the 306 to the 406, and it was based on a pro rate of £308. March renewal was £286.
Insurance companies have taken the p*ss now for some years. I used to have two cars on one Policy, only paying the higher premium. Fully comp meant that I could drive any car and anyone could drive mine. These are all now 'add-ons'. Now insurance is the biggest con out there. Nigerian emails don't even come close.

Surprised to hear that.

I am with Admiral for my Renault Twingo (the old LHD only ones) I ended up with them because they would insure it without a number plate, on the chassis number(I was importing it from Portugal) as part of a "normal" policy. All other options wanted £500plus for 30 days cover when you can't even drive the thing on the road (but the DVLA insist on it being insured and MOT'd before they will register it)

Come renewal time I expected I would then go find the cheapest, but their quote actually turned out to be with in a fiver of the compare sites so stuck with them for ease.

My 406 is with 1st Central. has been for 2 renewals now as they don't (seem) to try to sting you every year (unlike Swift Cover *shiver*), the renewal was actually cheaper than a 'new' quote from them on Money Supermarket and again withing a tenner of the cheapest so stuck with it for the simplicity of not proving no clams etc.

I renewed the 406s insurance in may when i started my new job, it went from £900/yr to £730 a year, they then asked if i had access to another car, in the end the 305 was added on so the 406 cost £540 for the year, the red 305 was £360.
The odd thing is that despite it being a fully comp policy i still can't jump into another insured car and drive it, admiral requires you to be over 25 for that.

One thing i dont like about admiral is the initial quote was dealt on the phone by someone in the UK who spoke very clearly and was easy to understand, but for any customer services phone calls they use overseas call centres.

Admiral have, until now, been a very good Insurance company and the prices have been very close to the ones on comparison sites - so I stuck with them.

Its only the recent shocker of a price, along with the messed up paper work and not being insured for commuting, that I shopped around.

I guess you never know how good an Insurance group is until you really need them to 'step-in' when you get hit by an old duffer in a Volvo.. ( Ducks and hides..)

If you read the way any of these companies write to you near renewal it's all designed to trip you up. You get lulled into a false sense of security; "don't worry, you don't have to do anything, it's all taken care of"......"your policy will Automatically renew"....

Now except for big price changes like Gingers, smaller uplifts slip through unnoticed or the policy holder just can't be arsed to shop around for the sake of a few extra quid.

So each year we all have to shop around and move things around again, all the utilities, home insurance, very frustrating.

BTW I've never forgotten to ring a certain Breakdown company to get a better price and I've never left it too long after renewal either no I haven't, you ask my missus :frown: :(
