Need a new wing mirror!

Post by Bailes1992 »

We leave site early on a Friday and as the main contractor was erecting fencing everywhere I decided to park outside with a fear of fencing falling on my car.

I'm working in a quiet industrial estate with wide roads so I parked on the side of the road outside the site along with many others.

Came out at 2.30pm to a mashed N/S mirror. Back was hanging on by one clip, the plastic casing has cracked and the mirror at a funny angle.
Managed to clip it all back together and buff out the scratch on the back but the motors in it are naffed and I can't get the mirror where I want it.

I could have had an aftermarket mirror for ~£100 but the standard backing wont fit correctly which means I'd have to get the new one painted etc etc. And after fitting an aftermarket mirror to my MK1 Focus I wasn't too pleased with the quality as the mirror would vibrate at speed.
So I just bit the bullet and ordered a new electric moving, folding and heated mirror equipped with a puddle light from ford... £170.

Because I need it ASAP and it trying to find one with heated glass, a puddle light, folding hinges and with electric movement would be an utter pain in the rear!

In fact I just checked ebay and they are all electric and some are heated but none are folding or have a puddle light.

Unfortunately it's not that easy.
1. Mine uses a different connector,
2. The mirrors fold when the car locks so having one mirror folding would be utterly ridiculous,
3. I pride myself on having a 146,000mile 6 year old car where everything works as it should.
4. And let's be honest it's not a 10 year old car worth sub £1000. Something like a folding mirror not working could seriously devalue the car when I go to sell it (probably in the new year).

I can understand wanting to keep the car functioning as it should, but crikey £130 is expensive, it might be worth watching eBay now and then for a pair of cheap used mirrors that have the right bits attached just in case they get clipped again. The best design was the old spring loaded mirrors on the 405.

Did you know that objects in mirror may be closer than they appear? I was in someone from works kia magentis and both mirrors stated this in capital letters, so much space is wasted on the mirror stating this pointless fact that you won't see what is behind

If I wanted to go to a standard mirror I'd have to change both mirrors and both door control modules. So it's really not worth it.

I was thinking of getting spares but I'm probably getting rid of the car early next year. I've been fancying a C30 D5 for a few months now. I've taken a few out for test drives and been very impressed. 180bhp, cracking 5pot warble and they return 45-50mpg. It depends how things are going with work though. Don't want to spend my savings to be made redundant a few months later!

Fuckin wing mirror smashing bastards :x :x :x

It was either a motorist, in which case they were a shitty-arsed cock warbler for not stopping, or a Lorry who maybe didn't realise he'd caught your car whilst doing a one thousand point turn.

Interesting you looking towards a Volvo, you can join the owners club! heck you'll even be in 'my' section too and you'll get to see what a great* bunch they are :?

I asked on VPCUK. I got ignored for a week then got 3 replies. One of them was someone trying to sell me a 2.0D S40. :?

I've driven 3 C30 D5s now and they've all been really impressive. I feel they are a good compromise between size, performance and economy. They seem to settle on the motorway quite well too!

I didn't like my Dads V50 because it always felt like it couldn't handle the power. I've always put it down to the useless Pirelli PZero Rosso tyres it always had fitted.

The D5 will remap to 220bhp and 500nm of torque too! A miltek exhaust makes them sound utterly evil too!

The D5 has a DPF I think and the engine dumps diesel on the exhaust stroke to regen the filter. Or something.

Trouble is the diesel fuel also found its way in the the oil sump and makes the level too high (and waters-down the oil) the 'fix' at the dealers was to drain a bit from the sump and keep checking :? I hope they've fixed this issue now?

You wanna join volvoforums.org and get further ignored there.

The main reason I posted on VPCUK is to find out about the oil dilution issues but didn't get a straight reply. It looks like all Volvo did was advise the oil was filled up only half way to give the oil level room to rise.
If I get one then first thing il be doin it getting a full service done and the belts changed. Il probably get a set of Focus ST brakes fitted and then il look into a stage one remap with DPF and EGR removal.

I'd be worried about buying a car that's had Diesel sloshing about in the sump, in fact I don't like that regen system. I don't know what the turbo makes of having diesel thrown at it for a start.

What ever I buy will be another 4/5year old car with a D5 and 80-100k on it like the Mondeo. Hopefully that way it's had minimal regens and more services.
Obviously this may not happen as it totally depends on work but if I do change a C30 will be what I get.
I'm not too worried about the diesel in the sumo issue as I've yet to heard of any D5 failures. They seem to be a solid lump but I will get rid of the DPF asap.
