Had my car TerraClean'd

Post by fattail95 »

I've been noticing recently that under full load, my '6 has been a little smokey, especially since I remapped it. So opened up planet and was greeted with injector correction values of between 2mm³/stroke and 3.5mm³/stroke which is considered very dirty. I tried using a bottle of RedX cleaner which didn't make much difference at all.

So, after seeing this TerraClean process done to a Jag on Wheeler Dealers, I decided to have it done on my own car. It's meant to remove built up carbon deposits and clean the internals of the engine, as well as the injectors. So I went on their website and found my local garage that does this, and booked it in. £80 to have it done and it takes 2 hours.

First of all, the fuel lines are disconnected and then plugged into this magic machine

The engine speed is set to ~1800rpm, and left for 20 minutes

The engine is then switched off, and the product left to "soak" for a further 20 minutes

The engine is then run for 20 more minutes to blast out the deposits. After the process was done, I was amazed by how much quieter the car is. The turbo spools up sooner and there is no more hesitance. Hopefully I should see some fuel economy improvements too! 8)

Just for the record, I'm in no way affiliated with this company, just sharing a good experience. :D

I saw the Wheeler Dealers episode where Edd China first demonstrated TerraClean, before he actually started paid-for endorsements - this was done to a Jaguar XK8, which failed its MOT based on pollution readings. TerraClean de-coked the engine and exhaust system, making the engine run much more smoothly and efficiently, and importantly, lowered the CO2 output to well below MOT limits.

I'm not affiliated with Wheeler Dealers, Edd China, TerraClean, or even PowerFlow. But I endorse all of the above! Just wish some bugger'd pay me to do so...

Its something i always intend to do after seeing it on wheeler dealers, there are no problems with my engine to speak of, but at 12 years old with 140,000 miles it would be nice to get rid of any carbon lining the intake and exhaust manifolds.
BTW what does this service cost, it was about £100 the last time i emailed about it, has it got any cheaper?

I've just looked at pricing this up for my 406 and the wife's Picasso - try to get it a bit cheaper you know?

Looks good but I mustard mitt I am often a bit skeptical of such things, so maybe a bit more research in my mind.

Benjamin - I bet you were quite miffed at the Terraclean chap dragging his hoses over your front bumper.....

I don't really understand how it works, if it 'shifts' deposits the engine has then got to spit them out via the eggsauce valves and turbo. It seems to works well though by all accounts and I imagine it pays for itself quite quickly through better MPG's.

I was going to sent my injectors away to be cleaned but may well look into this 'ere treatment.

Cost me £80 to have it done, worth the money IMO. Cheaper than sending the injectors off to be ultrasonically cleaned, which also has the drawback of leaving you without a car for a few days. A friend of mine has a 406 2.2HDi with injector corrections of more than 5  he's gonna give this a go before replacing them and see if it makes a difference. I'll report back!

I looked into this a few months ago.
I noticed my car was getting a little hesitant and rough with age. I took it down to a garage for diagnostics and in the end they stuck it on the rolling road and done 3 power runs. You could visually see that my turbo was coming on boost at different times. This was put down to sticky vanes int he turbo or a faulty actuator. They also put the fact the car was getting a bit rough down to worn injectors.

I considered Terraclean but was getting prices of £100+. I read some reviews online and ended up buying two cans of something called BG244.
Image

I put the first can in and drove over to Belgium. I noticed the engine was quieter and smoking less but not a lot else. When I returned I stuck the second can in and filled up again.
I went out to get a chineese one night and on the way back there is a sharp corner before a very steep incline. I stuck the car in 2nd and put my foot down and it started throwing out soot. I couldn't see out my back window, it was billowing out!
I changed up at 4000rpm and it done the same through 3rd before clearing up through 4th.
Every since then my car has been 100% better. Turbo spools up on time and the car is far smoother.

Really impressive stuff by all accounts.

I would love to get a Terraclean done but for it's far too expensive.

The Chineese got very cold a week last Saturday.

Got in the car and noticed the battery light was flickering. Drove to the end of the street and it went off.
Picked the Chineese up and the car wouldn't start.
Tried jumping it but as soon as we removed the leads it died soon after.

Ended up having to get towed home where my other half thought it would be a great time to tell me that it was fine when she had it a few hours earlier, she even took it through a Ford!

Removed the altenator and stripped it and the regulator down. Clean it all up and replaced the bearings and it's been right as rain ever since!

Was it another Mondeo, or did she hit a C-Max?
