I know, I really want a set of 16" steelies for the Winter but the 17'S I have were too good to turn down, and, at the time, it was 'only' £10/corner to swap 'em.

Fucksticks, I'm not very good when it comes to cars and moneh.

There must be used Vulva rimz on eblag that'll fit you tyerz though, and still for less than one double swap? Doesn't matter if they're steel or alloy or clean or scratched as long as they fit, they're only for a few months and will usually be out in the dark :supafrisk:

Welly wrote:Just phoned a few places to fit my Winters this season (swapping tyres on the same rimz).

Was £40.00 last 2 years.

Place 1: £60.00
Place 2: "we're not fitting your tyres"
Place 3: £63.50

:(

Place 3 is a mobile service so I'm getting them in to save on pez, and they can be fitting me tyres while I carry on working.

Fitting this Friday.
I paid £20 - but only cos the local immigrant garage couldn't balance the centreless Hoggars....

Maybe they will shake the car to pieces, I won't find out until I drive it again.....
It also seemed a good time to 'bin' the locking wheel bolts.

I surmise that these tyre places are getting fed up with people turning up with ebay tyres and are now increasing fit-only costs to deter it. Mind you where there's a scheme there's a schemer so there'll soon be lots of "we fit any old sh*t" places where no receipt is given.

That's a good point, you could probably buy your own 2nd hand tyre machine for a few hundred. Cash in Welters!!

Do you really trust a man in a van to balance all your wheels correctly?
I struggle with getting my wheels valences properly. Only people who ever get it bang on are the big companies like KwikFit.

I always depress my clutch when starting the car. Saves huge amount of wear on the DMF and there's less strain on the starter.
I too leave my car in gear when parked up. Belt and braces incase the hand brake fails.

I'm going to try, it's a new fancy service so the equipment should be ok, we'll see.

To be honest the place I normally use went like this:

Me: Hi mate I come in every winter and you do my Tyres and alignment for me, just wanted to book in again....
Them: Err, right, I dunno but go on.....
Me: Yeah well, I want the 4 x tyres mounting and then the full alignment like last time mate, you know.....that was £85.00 last year I've got the Invoice still...
Them: It won't be £85.00, it'll be £120.00.
Me: Fu...wuh..erm, have your prices increased this year then?
Them: No its always been that...
Me: Right, err, I'll have to come back to you then.
Them: Bye then.

They can FRO with that attitude, they aint having my money this time f*cking cock warblers :frown:

Costs me 40 quid-odd to get the yoyo's tyres swapped over here (damn bus tyres  ). Once more I investigate a second-hand set of rims, once more I find that a new set of tyres is cheaper

I used one of these. http://www.abbastands.co.uk/images/prod ... ker-01.jpg
As long as you take the tyre off the side of the wheel with the well, it's not really that difficult to change your own tyres. As to balancing, I know a couple of people who put some old weights on, and take the car in with the tyres and old weights fitted and complain of vibration. Taking the wheels off and balancing is around £10 per tyre then.

good to make friends with tyre places!!

I moved 2 years ago so lost all my "connections" in the trade.

Only ONE tyre place round here...

So went in one day, late on when I could see they were quiet and had a chat, said what i wanted done, banter about cars etc...

Brought it in for the work, paid full price for wheel alignment and balancing...but got them some beers too.

Never paid full price since, its always a fiver and a pack of beers!!

I realise these checks should be done regularly., I do them each week.

but for a lot of drivers, they dont even know where the screenwash is or how to change a bulb. Education in bite size bits :)

Thats all good and well but if its an alloy you will damage it and you still need them balanced!

Just been out to spy on the mobile tyre fitting man, beautifully fitted-out new Merc Sprinter all cleverly done and a really nice bloke.

Popped back again to pretend to get something from the car and he was balancing one of the wheels.......by whizzing a handle round by hand

I've got a motorway run to do tomorrow.........

That sounds, erm, interesting

I suppose you need to keep the speed down to be on the safe side, how fast do you think he was turning it and what's the diameter of your tyres?
