Power steering failure
Hi guys, whilst I was driving my 2.0 diesel turbo hdi 406 90 bhp...battery charge fault came up on the screen and the power steering failed. I have managed to get the car home and it still starts up and drives at the moment, although it's a bitch to steer around corners with no power steering. Any ideas what the problem could be? I'm thinking the alternator might be done for. Anybody had the same fault?

is the Aux/belt still on/intact?

Good call, just checked and it's gone, must have snapped, what's the cost of a fix on it? Can a ameteur do it?

Re: Power steering failure
Its not something I have done, but I watched James do it on his car.
If you can get a mate to push on the tensioner with a long spanner, the belt 'should'
just go into place.
Here is a link to the diagram of where the belt goes..

Re: Power steering failure
They are not quite like changing the fan belt on a dynamo but are doable, as ginger says its really a 2 man job although I have changed one by myself but there is not a lot of space so you need to be a bit flexible.

Re: Power steering failure
Cheers lads! It's a relief to know it's a relatively simple job. I was fearing it being far more costly. I've ordered a replacement and I'll give it go. Merry Christmas gents and thanks again.

Re: Power steering failure
The only thing I would say - although its a bit late now, is make sure the belt they send is the right length, I have had problems with this in the past so I measure my belt and order it by length. A bit difficult if you don't have one I know but you can run a piece of string round the pulleys and measure that.

Re: Power steering failure
How safe is it to drive without the belt? Would it be able to do a short distance journey (12 miles) or would this cause major damage to the engine. I have one ready to pickup tomorrow and need to get to it somehow
Re: Power steering failure
Charge battery first, go in daylight so you don't need lights, don't use any thing electrical, your battery should keep going long enough.
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer
Re: Power steering failure
Would be a good idea to take a spare battery with you. It shouldn't hurt the engine, a flat battery is the most likely problem.

Re: Power steering failure
Thanks, I thought it might cause some major damage like overheating or something seizing up. I've only had the peugeout a year and this is the first belt to go so I thought I'd check first
Re: Power steering failure
*Before replacing the Aux belt,
Check all the pulley's /starting with the Alternator pulley..
Make sure they spin freely by hand. (obviously the crank pulley wont.

I tried the old fashioned method of using the wives tights, she took em' off first of course! Didn't work. Was a long shot anyway.
