Bloody Stealers!!!

Post by mjb »

Cambelt: £30
Tensioner: £35
Auxiliary belt: £25

Top radiator hose: £75
Bottom radiator hose: £55

FOR A COUPLE OF LITTLE BITS OF RUBBER?!?!?!

I'm praying I can find some of this cheaper at a factor...

But I definitely need to get the belts done this weekend. I caught a glimpse of my aux belt yesterday and what I saw shocked me to the point I'm thinking of getting the train to work the rest of this week  The thing's lost about a quarter of the rubber tracks on the inside, it's all rotted away, so I'm really anxious to discover what the cambelt's like

Oh dear m, there is nothing worse than driving like that (you should have heard my bottom pulley  )

No offence like, are you sure you can do the cambelt yourself??

I don't think the belts and pulley price is too bad but the hoses seem alot.

I agree. Thought the prices for the belts were pretty good but the hoses are way over priced. I'd get them checked if I were you.

Yeah I've discovered they actually do a cambelt and tensioner as a kit making it around £55 all-in, which is a lot cheaper than a couple of factors have quoted me, however the water pump is only about £20 from the factors but £55 from the stealers, so I'm going shopping on Friday!

Welton: I'm not sure mate. Any other car I'd have no fear, but there's just no bloody room to squeeze my hand in on this thing, I may not even be able to reach the cover bolts!

However money's -extremely- tight, and with this long weekend and the promise of acceptable weather (still forecast reasonable) I'm going to head off down to the parents for the weekend where my Dad can give me a hand. If needs be I know a couple of car owners down there, so I'll take my towbar with me just in case I need to re-locate it to a garage...

I'm also going to take the radiator out and descale(viakal?)/rad-weld it while I have the chance (I'm so scared of it clogging the heater matrix!) :)

radweld wont block the matrix, this stuff is only a problem on the old rover 827 as the water ways are microscopic (thank you honda)
the kit is always cheaper than buying the parts individually,
both the belts are dayco one's and are FAR cheaper from a motor factors
water pump will be cheapest (probably) from euro car parts
you might want to budget for a crankshaft pulley, as the timing marks will almost certainly be out, get a 306 xsi 8v one as its solid without a rubber damper so it will never slip and upset the timing marks

OK, got a bottle.

Shockingly, the stealer's belt/tensioner kit and alternator belt are both cheaper than any of the factors I tried. A local factor's cheapest for the pump, when you factor  in p&p from euro car parts...
you might want to budget for a crankshaft pulley, as the timing marks will almost certainly be out, get a 306 xsi 8v one as its solid without a rubber damper so it will never slip and upset the timing marks
Timing marks? Thought it was just a hole in each of the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft sprocket with corresponding holes in the engine, and a lug or something on the crankshaft sprocket to fit the pulley on right...

I got hold of a 306 haynes btw, makes things slightly less muddy in my mind - cheers :) I'm sooo glad I get 4 days to do this ;)

ok, i should have said timing hole, but what usually happens is the crankshaft pulley has a rubber damper between the inside and outisde of it, and the outer edge slips messing up the timing hole

mjb,

Your also going to need a homemade flywheel locking tool... its got to be spot on otherwise you aint removing jack ! lol
It is an easy job, once you've done it 2, or 3, or 4 times :D

YOur better off getting a Goodyear kit, belt and tensioner for cheaper than the stealers.... or at least mine was... as for the condition of the cambelt... well mine had done, many, many miles.... ok about 78k and it looked no more than a day old.... honest.... but my original aux belt was chuffed..

One thing most people don't understand is that none of the stealers are actually run by Peugeot..... they are Franchised.... which means each one has its own mark up / pricing for parts and services etc... they are all based on the MRRP from Peugeot... which is about 50% cheaper than what you pay sometimes......lol

I paid £20+ for 4 turbo mounting studs, from the stealers... from a local engineering / fixing suppliers they were, £1.50 each ! ! ! !

ahh yeah I know what you mean. Given AFAICT the pulley has to come off in order to remove the lower cover and then back on to lock the crankshaft, wouldn't I just be able to reposition the rubber bit then? or will the lot be a write-off as soon as I yank it off?

Since obtaining the 306 Haynes and some french 306 manual (pain in the arse to translate french engineering terms, but it shows the XU10J2) I've gotten a lot more confident about this job. I'm still bloody concerned about the lack of space though, and I think I may need to fly an Ethiopian (or a supermodel) in to get at the pompe à eau, sorry, water pump... All I can say is access had better be a whole lot better from the wheel arch!

It is.... you remove the wheel and the plastic liner from the wheel arch gives you a "bit" more room!

As for the pulley, I simply let got my bro to re-align it for me.... and it worked a treat... saves £88 +vat from the stealer ! sorry franchise !
