random non start issue
A friend from uni rang today about a 306 hdi
Apparently it starts up ok, but if its turned off for whatever reason (say to go to the shop) and turned back on no matter how shortly it was turned off, it wont restart it just turns over, but waiting about 5 mins it seems to start up again
I havent seen the car yet but apparently the wiring has been butchered a bit, some plugs are not plugged in.
Anything obvious that could be the problem, ill be able to plug in pp2000 when i get a look at the car, but just wanted some ideas.

Best to-See what fault codes show up.
if none..go for cranksensor. that'd be my guess .

Me too - sometimes when they are faulty they can get too hot, but apparently if you spray some 'cold spray' onto it can help ( lowers its temperature )

Possibly engine management coolant sensor....
Re: random non start issue
Had a similar problem with my C5 and it turned out to be the regulator on the HP pump.

Re: random non start issue
I got the car round today, it really has been butchered at.
There are parts round behind the ecu and the wiring going to it, there was chafed wiring, burnt insulation and a relay box dangling down. So i took out the battery, quickly tidied at the wiring but no change.
The in tank pump has a bit of diy wiring going on, a wire runs from the fuse box, under the carpet, and up to the pump, so once the ignition is on the pump comes on and stays on with the ignition:

This relay in the engine bay is making a clicking noise when the engine is on:
And these are the faults it showed up:

and this

I still have the spare HDI engine sitting about, with all its sensors, so far i have changed the cam sensor but its stayed the same, what faults should i pay attention here, is the pressure regulator sensor worth changing?

Re: random non start issue
That is a right flipping mess, the last fault "Key Faulty" intermittent is a pain because it looks as though sometimes the car won't recognise its own key and immobilises itself?
By the sounds of this car there could be a short in the wiring somewhere, question is: Where?

Re: random non start issue
I changed the following sensors
- camshaft sensor
- flywheel sensor
- both of the sensors on the common rail
- and the fuel pressure regulator
off the spare 406 engine which ran fine, the 306 started up ok, after a jump start from the subaru, but when i turned it off it wouldnt start up again until 5 mins had passed.
The immobiliser could be a problem but there is no light coming up on the dash showing an immobiliser problem, ive heard of people bypassing the immobiliser, what is involved in that?

Re: random non start issue
Was it the pump pressure regulator you changed. On the back of the pump two screws and a plug?

Re: random non start issue
feck i forgot about that, i changed the one at the top of the pump thats held in with 3 screws. There is one at the side that could be changed aswell.
Re: random non start issue
Its on the back of the pump, opposite end to the cam belt.

Re: random non start issue
regulator changed, but the problem remains
Re: random non start issue
Have alook under the 'Battery tray.
iirc there's two thick black cables with 'multiplugs on..sometimes they get wet & frig everything up.
Re: Imob..Will pp2000 see if key and Bsi is doing its handshake?
