Ive got a problem with my R reg 1.9td estate and i was wondering what you guys think.
It started fine in glasgow and was fine on the motorway to edinburgh (40-45 miles) then once in edinburgh it started making a funny noise, as if the exhaust was knackered (basically same engine noise but louder and slightly more metallic) and the engine management light came on. No real loss of power or anything and the engine would switch off and on again fine. When the engine was revved above 3000rpm or so the management light would go out but there was a fair bit of black smoke.
Next morning it wouldnt start and the big ol' red STOP light is on!!!! Its turning over fine but thats it
oh dear, this sounds to me like a jumped cambelt, it could be a case of a injection pump advance solenoid has seized, either way the same fault will be logged, this is also the only fault i know of in this system that will put the engine light on and the stop light
have you had the cambelt changed or have reciept of it being changed?

Timing belt was done in the summer (at about 199k miliage is now just over 201k) and yup ive got a receipt.
Both warning lights aren't on together, first it was the engine management (the yellow engine shape one) then the next day its just the big red one.
I spoke to a mechanic i know and he said maybe the EGR valve or a needle lift sensor (??) have gone which would cause the engine to go into safety mode and this retards the timing or something to kind of protect itself. But when i asked him about it the car would actually start!
I hope its just one of those and not the cam belt!!
niddle lift sensor would not cause the stop light to be on, it will just run really bad and sound awful, definatley not EGR, the injection pump advance soleniod will put the engine light on and then the stop light as it thinks the injection timing is wrong and is telling you to stop as you may be doing major damage, get the fault codes read and go from there

if it is the pump solenoid, i think they cant be renewed sepperatley, and a new injection pump will be required, new from pug i think there arround £1200!
a used one would be a better bet, a garage should charge no more than 3 hours to fit and set injection timing

I think you can get diagnostic computers from ebay for around £60. My brother bought one, works fine with my car (found one error with the pre heat system). Useful bit of kit to have access to with out having to pay everytime.
Turns out there was nothing coming past the pump so a second hand one has been fitted. Although there's now an extra noise (something between a dug dug dug and a tick tick tick) coming from the engine. Any idea what that could be??
Also the engine management light comes on and off whilst driving but there's no loss of power of anything.
Garage said there were a lot of fault codes (too many to read!) they checked a few and wiring was a possible cause for a lot of them. Also the battery has drained while the cars been sitting for a couple of days.
sounds like they fitted the wrong pump, theres 3 types of pump, bosch, lucas, and bosch as3 vp20, a special pump made for the 406
though it may be something simple like the throttle potentiometer or it just needs calibrating, or the needle lift sensor
or most likely, the static timing is out by a few degrees, getting the fault codes read and putting them up here will help

out of curiousity, what kind of diagnostic, all the ones that i've seen are OBDii, would that work on a 1998 model?
thats my age getting to me
