In response to my request for a 406 handbook or PDF equivalent Peugeot sent this reply:
Thank you for your recent enquiry made via the Peugeot website.
Due to the ever changing nature of our business and newer vehicles produced, Peugeot have stopped producing some owners manuals, however Peugeot have invested in a public website that holds most of the information that you require, and you can access this from http://www.peugeot.com. select 'international services' then 'technical documentation', then it will bring you to a screen asking you to register with 'InfoTech'.
This will give you pdf version of handbook pages for 406 from 2002. Maybe I'll stop looking for my lost copy...
