Lights playing up, new COM2000?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Lights playing up, new COM2000?

Post by Valandil »

So the high beams (and also the fog lights I recently discovered) have been playing up on my 02 HDI Coupe for a while now but are getting worse so I might do something about it! They keep turning themselves off after a few seconds.

Long story short, I found out it only happens on auto lights, they work properly when the lights are explicitly turned on. So I'm assuming I need a new COM2000?

But can I use any unit? I of course need one with the auto lights button, auto wiper option, trip computer/screen thingy button, ESP and with no rear washer, but will any unit that has these work?

Cheers!

If the problem only occurs when auto lights is enabled, it's likely (though not certain) to be the light sensor (behind the rear view mirror).

It can be disabled in PP2000 and then you just have manual lights all the time, if you can deal with that :cheesy: Otherwise the replacement sensors are available from Peugeot.

Yes, it sounds like your comms.
You can disable the auto-lights with pp2000 if you have it, or you can contact Adrian Bingham ( ade1122 on ebay ) and he is a coupe breaker with spare comms aplenty...

Or it can be repaired by Graeme, for the same price as a 2nd hand one.

Jon may be right too, but my car had a similar issue and the comms sorted it.

I couldn't be doing without auto lights after having them for a few years! :cheesy: I did wonder about the light sensor a while ago but dismissed it for some reason, now I'm not sure! Any idea how much they are from peugeot? Maybe it would be the easier thing to try first. I also wondered about getting it repaired, but I couldn't have the car off the road long enough.

You will definitely need a comms 2000 with ESP if as you say your car has it,bit rarer to get hold of and ultimately more expensive.

Yea I hadn't appreciated that they seem to be a lot harder to get hold of, which is perhaps another reason to try the light sensor first. I've asked my local stealer for a price, will see what they say. Though I couldn't really find a part number for it on service box, I didn't really understand what the diagram was trying to tell me to be honest!

I have sent and email to Ade on your behalf ( hope you don't mind ) for a price of a replacement comms. No reply yet.

The one you want is the same as the one from a saloon ( no rear wash/wipe ) and ESP is a must - you can tell by the connectors on the back, i.e. ESP comms have 5 connections on the back, non-ESP has 4.

The part number should be something like 6242C6 but as long as its got the ESP, auto-lights, trip computer, front and rear fogs with NO rear wash/wipe then it'll fit.. :cheesy:

Hi, I have had an email from Adrian regarding your comms but sadly he has no stock at the moment.

It may be worth signing up ( if you haven't already ) to the coupe club, www.406coupeclub.org and see if anyone has any.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I was waiting for the dealer to get back to me with a price for the rain sensor but they're struggling to find it on the parts diagrams!

Ah well, thanks anyway! I am on the coupe website but I was gonna see what the sensor price was first. Though they want £60 for a new aerial so I won't get my hopes up...

You can enable and disable (toggle) auto light by holding the button on the end of the left hand stalk.

I'm not having much luck with the parts diagrams either. As far as I can make out it's the whole mirror unit, and there are four of them:
8153 LH
FXT- - BLACK CORNELIE
- FRONT WIPER BLADE W/O RAIN SENSOR AND DAY -NIGHT INNER REAR MIRROR

8148 KL
FXT- - BLACK CORNELIE
- FRONT WIPER BLADE WITH RAIN SENSOR AND DAY -NIGHT INNER REAR MIRROR

8149 G8
FXX- - BLACK
- ELECTROCHROMATIC DAY-NIGHT INTERIOR MIRROR UNTIL RPO 09001
BLUE NON INSET CONNECTOR

8153 SF
- ELECTROCHROMATIC DAY-NIGHT INTERIOR MIRROR SINCE RPO 08897
BLUE INSET CONNECTOR

There are things advertised on eBay that seem to start at about £15. Do any of them look like the one you have ?!

Hi, I thought the sensor was just clipped to a bracket that was stuck to the windscreen, behind the mirror cowling..??

Well the dealer has turned around and told me they don't sell them anymore...not sure I believe him after the trouble they had finding it, might just habe given up, but then the cars aren't getting any newer...

I just assumed it was stuck to the windscreen with an adhesive pad or something. Sorry rwb I can't seem to find what you saw!

So I finally got hold of a new (well, second hand) sensor, but it doesn't work! Car doesn't even recognise it's plugged in. I assumed they would all be the same but it does have a different part number, does anyone know whether this would make a difference or is the sensor broken?
