OK, this is getting annoying. I have taken half the dash apart to get to underneath the relay connector so i could measure some voltages with the relay in and I am none the wiser.
First, there are 4 wires there - blue/yellow (earth), purple (assuming from the stalk switch), white and green. With the ignition on, the purple and green are permanently on, no matter what position the stalk switch is on. With the ignition off, only the green one is on (could be white instead of green - can't remember). Ho-hum...
Second, since the purple wire (I think it's 1B from Haynes wiring) is constantly on, the relay is constantly on so it's passing current through from green to white wire since there's 12v on both of them. However, the lights are still off and there's no activity under the bonnet's fusebox either. Ho-hum...
I guess the next step would be to see whether the stalk is working at all - why would 1B wire always be on with ignition on?
I wonder if I am looking at the correct relay to start with at all! However, with half the dash apart, I had a good look under there and couldn't see any other relays there other than the indicator one.
Needleless to say, I am very near giving up on this as I don't know what else to check... unless someone can advise some more? mjb? james?

If you've still got it all apart, have a closer look at the wires. Look for the numbers on them - that's the only way to be sure exactly what's what. Another thing to think about is with the relay in, cover off, sidelights on, and doors closed, turn the switch very very gently and see if you can hear/feel the relay click.
OH HANG ON
Daft question... but are you trying the foglights on their own, or with sidelights on as well - they won't light on their own!

I have actually taken the relay apart. With the ignition on, the relay is ALWAYS on (contact closes) no matter what I do with the stalk controls. And yes, I try it with the side lights on
I did have a look at the writing on the wiring, but unfortunately I couldn't see much as the space is so restricted (a la your cambelt incident). Not sure if wiring colour will help anyone indetify if I am on the right set of rails?

Hi.. well this one is unde the steering wheel when you take the cover off under the fuseboxes. I can't seem to find any mention of a fog lamp relay in a Haynes manual (for the D8). If you could have a look, that would be great

Ok you've got me looking at the circuit diagram now!
You should just have a perminent 12v going in via a 50a fuse (connection 3b), a connection to earth, and then two others, one of which has a switch and connects a solenoid in the other.
You say u have 12v going in, so fuse is all ok (you'd know anyway as other things wouldn't work). The pin marked 1b (I hope) is connected to your fog light switch and it is this that flicks on the solenoid, which in turn flicks the switch on the other connection marked 5b.
In theory, with the fog light switch off there should be 0v on pin 5b, but with it on, you should have 12v on 5b. If this is not happening then either you have a faulty relay or problems elsewhere.
Let me know.

No, that's the thing. The wire that I THINK goes to the fog switch is permanently on when the ignition is on, so the relay is always closed (I opened it up to verify that). So I have 3 wires with 12v on it.. permanently. One from the fuse from the engine, into the relay and back out... that's 2 already and 1 from the switch. Which is what's leading me to believe that I am actually looking at the wrong relay socket. But I can't see the writing on the wires very clearly as the space is so limited
What I'd like to know for definite is where the relay for the fog lamps is EXACTLY. As noone seems to know this

Ok after looking on google, many people have had this problem.
I cant seem to find where the relay is located. All I do know is that the connection should be black not brown. That is according to my diagram anyway. So maybe its worth having a look under the bonnet for a 4 pin black relay connection and giving that a go.

I dread to ask, but any luck yet?

Erm, no I haven't.... That pic looks very different from what my 4-pin relay looks like. I'll visit the stealers some time this week with regards to this, so I'll ask them where the heck the relay is located and buy a correct relay... 3rd time lucky!...maybe

Welp, went to the stealers today to get myself an oil/fuel filter (£10 for both) and I asked about the relay for the fron fog lamps.... FOURTY SIX QUID + VAT they want for a relay!
But at least he showed me where it is, so I'll have a good look at the weekend again
