Buying a 405

I drove past a local car dealers yesterday, there was a 405 sitting in the neglected car corner, beside an old primera and isuzu trooper.
So today i called round after work, its a 405 estate, turbo d, it must be a late one it has the airbag, all electric windows and air con, the bodywork looks rightly dented and scuffed but there are a set of original alloys on it, and the clock says 150k, the engine bay looks clean.

The dealer is looking £150, i have went off the idea of fitting a HDi in the 305, but a Turbo XUD will do nicely, did the 405 get a bosch or lucas pump? I suppose at this price its hard to go wrong.

For some reason the 405 seemed to go better than the 406 with the same ( ish ) lump, my Dads old 405 engine was the turbo diesel and the speedo broke at 215K, kept it another 5 years - went to Scotland and back at least 4 times a year and was trouble free, apart from saggy headlining....
I think the 405 was 1870cc and the 306/406 was 1905cc. The difference visually is the fuel filter housing lid is clipped down on the older ones, and 4 allen bolts on the newer ones, although I could be wrong. Also the newer ones have a curvy dash like the 406, the older ones have a boxy one like the 309

As for fuel pumps, no idea.

Most 405 1.9 XUD's had Bosch pumps, but some of the late run-out models had the Lucas pump, like the 306. I think everyone agrees Bosch is best.

The 405 certainly did go better than the 406, primarily because its a lot lighter, the same situation existed between the BX and the Xantia, many BX owners were very disappointed with the performance and economy of the Xantia. Both the 1.8 and 1.9 engines produced 90hp but the smaller one gave it higher up the rev range.

The 405 td used to be my favorite second hand buy until the 406 came along, I got them for a number of friends that now have 406's

FWIW, the only 'real'* problem I ever came across on the 405s was the fuel shutoff solenoid failing on the Bosch pumps. Unscrew it, take out the needle and replace. Just have to remember to stall it in a high gear to switch it off.
*As opposed to things like punctures, flat batteries and other owner-related problems.
AA had quite a few, and no 'known' faults ever materialized.

Sounds like the perfect donor for the 305 and you'll get some money back for the alloys and various bits and just bridge what's left of the shell?

Went today to pick it up, the dealer isnt obviously motivated much by the thought of getting £150, he said he would blow up the tyres and start up the car,
This evening he told me to call round tommorow evening. Its no biggie but a bit of a nuisance after leaving work early and rushing to get there in time.

I was thinking the alloys may do the 305, there might be the odd bit of trim/miscelanious items here and there that may do some 405 owner, the only thing is looking around this old beaten up 405 it reminds me of how nice they were, they did give them a really good set of seats.

If you're selling bits, I need a block to heater matrix lower hose please!

Oh, and rear ARB clamp bolts!

Finally got the old yoke home this evening, blew up the tyres, attached the jump leads and it fired up, there is over half a tank of diesel,

I have the battery on the charger now, the engine seems to be running fine, makes a nice clatter when cold but gets reasonably smooth when warmed up.

reminds me of the old 405 ihad years ago.
same colour -same seat's.

Strangely..it didn't have a turbo..so it was a snail...so ididnt keep it long.


it don't look to bad. Not many left..surely its worth saving?

It looks okay to me Frank, makes me reminisce and go a bit wistful....

The usual 405 wear and tear, the 1905cc engine - I really really like it... :cheesy:

I remember driving a new demonstrator similar to this - a '92 GLX IIRC, almost the first of the 1905 cc cars. It was really impressive, especially 4th and 5th gear performance. Pulled like a train from 1500 to 4500, felt a tiny bit nose-heavy compared to the 1900 petrol one I was used to and when idling you couldn't tell it was a diesel unless you opened a door.

Later on they seemed rough compared to a good HDi, but outstanding in their day.

She is really a beauty,even with these spots of rust and neglected interior.
Peugeot really designed it well.

Top bombing Frank!

I had a G-reg 1.9 petrol GR and loved it. I think they were better than the 406 in many ways. They certainly handled better.
