Grease for Plastic Gear Linkages?
In the Volvo there's a couple of plastic to metal ball/cup type joints for the gear selector cables that I fancy 'lubing up' but have an idea that petroleum-based grease can destroy plastic?
It came from the Factory with a White Grease, any idea what it might be?

I've got some CV joint stuff thats white, that should be safe on plastics if it's good on rubber

I expect that grease would be white lithium grease....not the spray type, but in a tub.

Perfecto, on my internet travels I kept seeing Lithium grease as it's 'synthetic'. I think. Or something.
Wonder if Amazon sell it........

Re: Grease for Plastic Gear Linkages?
mineral grease will degrade rubber as will diesel, engine oil, petrol ect, plastics are a different kind of material and are not affected, they sell grease in plastic tubs that should be a good indicator.
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer

Red rubber grease is probably your best bet. It's designed for brake sliders and is designed specifically not to deteriorate the rubber boots.

I'd have thought the Comma stuff on Amazon would do you.
I've seen lots of stuff worn out (not just on cars) when a dab of grease at the right time would have saved them.

Isn't most bicycle grease Lithium? Sure I've got a tub of it in the garage, on the second shelf, between the track pump and the radio.... Get yourself down to the local bike shop Welters.

I was just using that to make the point about that type of grease is safe to use with plastics.Welly wrote:Cheers Jasper, that stuff only seems available in America? or should I try to find a quality alternative Lithium Grease in the UK?
The Comma stuff should be fine as would the stuff that gumby suggested.
You should be able to buy the white lithium grease in your local car accessory shop or Halfords and the like.
Personally I use a multi purpose lithium grease, but you can buy the white lithium grease in small tubs.

Re: Grease for Plastic Gear Linkages?
I've ordered an general purpose White Lithium from Amazon now £3.99 delivered. DP-60 it's called, it's a spray/straw thing but I'll squirt a pile of it in a lid and smear some on my balls, sorry I mean ball & cup mechanism. Should be handy for other stuff around the place to.
