Re: aghhh. which model
The 2.2 petrol engine is brilliant; really fizzy peppy engine that loves to be revved. Makes a great noise too (for a 4- cylinder engine), especially with a suitable stainless exhaust system fitted. Unfortunately it's no cheaper to tax than a V6 (same tax bracket), and it isn't much more economical on motorway cruises. It is noticeably better on fuel economy when driving around town though.
The downside to the 2.2 is its' rarity - of the 109,000x Coupes ever built, only around 3,600 were fitted with the 2.2 petrol engine. They're not that much more common with the saloons and estates either. Additionally, the 2.2 petrol seems to burn off engine oil; I have to top mine up every thousand miles or so.
If I were to go for another 406, it'd likely be a V6 Coupe.

Re: aghhh. which model
Very nice colour combination for inside & outside, but still a lot of miles under it's belt.
Looks pretty solid, but a pre-2000 LX has quite a low spec on it compared to one a year newer.annie wrote:
saw this while looking at estates. very nice colours. found a local estate 90hp hdi on ebay for £850 and says has had new cambelthttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121662359857? ... EBIDX%3AIT
Looks reasonable, but get rid of the wheels as soon as poss. Offset is all wrong leaving them sitting too far inside the arches & it will eventually wear out suspension components (even more so if it's lowered too) & screw up the tyre wear.annie wrote:what does the forum think to modded cars.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-PEUGEOT- ... 1e9ee4b009
nice spec but dpf gone. will this pass an mot like it?
The diesels are all pretty solid, but if fuel costs aren't a big concern, a petrol engine is where you can find a bargain. Just be aware, my 1999 2.0 petrol did 40mpg at a steady 60-70 on a run, but it dropped to 28mpg when "pressed" a little harder. If you want a diesel, don't get hung up looking for a particular engine - just get the best you can find as they all have pros & cons, but you'd be much happier with a well maintained 90bhp than a 2.2hdi that's throwing up a different warning light each week. The 90bhp doesn't have a dual mass flywheel & can be remapped to be quicker than a 110. A 110 can be remapped to be quicker than a 2.2 & doesn't have a DPF. A 2.2 can have the DPF removed & with a remap will leave most things standing. If you want to go old school the 1.9 & 2.1 are totally solid old engines & in certain conditions can be quicker than their hdi counterparts.
A GLX or Exec of any age will be a good bet & if you want newer you'll find a 2000 on LX or Rapier should still tick all the boxes. If going for a coupe try to grab a Silver or Black limited edition, but use any wheel damage as a bargaining tool to get money off as they were uber rare when I had a set.
My personal top 3 would be:
1. a 2.2hdi SRi (extremely rare)
2. a 110bhp Rapier
3. a 2.1td GLX

Re: aghhh. which model
The 2.0. Hdi is without doubt the most reliable and economical engine, look at the mileages some for sale have covered. I have two, on in a 406 which has covered 237,000 miles and still has the original clutch and DMF and a C5 at 200,000 miles in similar condition.
The 2.2 Hdi goes well but uses disproportionately more fuel and is more complicated having a DPF and all the associated gadgetry.
I personally wouldn't have an auto, if the box goes wrong it will probably write the car off, apart from increased fuel consumption and reduced performance. They can also be dangerous for people of my age.

Re: aghhh. which model
The only thing that springs to mind is 72k and no mention of cambelt...
Otherwise, for £400, it looks excellent. Reminds me of my old D8

Hi - its an older model ( like me.. ) with all the toys at a good price, but its also a petrol.
Is it close to where you live?
Check these nice ones out...;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-406-2 ... 3aaa8d0698
And my favourite; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-PEUGEOT- ... 2ee19f86cb
If I was to spend over £1000 on a 12 - 15 year old car I would want a full service history with at least a GLX or SE spec.

yup.all of those in the watch list.. going to see the local 90 hdi estae in red.
the guildford one for my neighbour is about 30 miles from me in worthing and shereall ynedds another car preftoday. she can only get 500 from her acct without impacting on the mortgage payment so needs are car now.
she likes the leather and is not bothered about 20 to the gallon arond town as her insurance will pay up so this car onltneeds to last a few months. the exec in guildford looks ideal. asked him about the cambelt but at that price id be tempted to risk the cambelt. im sure she could resell it with a short mot and stillnot lose much money.

Yes, the saloon is ideal as a stop gap - and may prove itself to be a great car to keep and do the belts, or may not be as good as expected and can be sold for the same money if not more than its current price.
The engine is a favourite for the 306 club chaps to put in their cars...

I spotted that as a potential bargain when I was browsing yesterday.annie wrote:yup.all of those in the watch list.. going to see the local 90 hdi estae in red.

Not overly sure about the older 2.0 16v, but my 99 model used to do 23-26 around town. Can't see the 97 model being that far away from that so fuel consumption not too bad.
As an added bonus, I'm pretty sure that 306 S16 & GTi-6 parts can be added fairly easily for a bit more oomph at a later date.
