90 or 110 HDI?

Post by Benner »

A friend at work has seen my D8 and has now fallen in love with 406's.

He is really interested in getting an HDI estate but has asked me which would be better, the 90 or the 110?

Before I joined here I would have instantly said the 110 (the more the better!) but after seeing a few things on here I am now not so sure.

Economy and reliability are very important here, so I am really torn! Should he go for the simplier and more reliable 90, or the more powerful and more economical ( I think?) 110?

Whats your opinion?

If you went for a 90 you would always be left wondering what the 110 would be like :|

Diesels are frustrating things to drive at times, the only resolve being some decent torquey grunt in the higher gears of which the 110 has plenty of.

I would say 110 but take your time buying , and go about with a simple list of checks so you can interogate the seller. Eventually you will find either an older low mileage one or a newer higher mileage one which has had loads spent on replacing all thoses things we know about (which aren't that bad really are they?).

If you found one which had been into Peugeot recently for a new lift pump, A/C condenser, Cooling fan etc. I would snap it up quick.

Is the 110 really that bad as everyone makes it out to be?

We only got the 110 in the 406 D9 and the 2.1 SRDT in the D8...Australia got the HDI 90 in the 307 which wasn't intercooled?

It isn't bad, but you do hear of the same faults coming up again and again and they arent the cheapest. Mind you, every 406 has these I suppose.

in the saloon go for the 90, but in an estate it has to be a 110
the economy is better in the 110, as the 90 has to be worked so hard, the only disadvantage of the 110 over the 90 is the fact it has a dmf

Is there any advantage to having a DMF as opposed to a solid one?

A DMF simply absorbs the rough nature of a Diesel unit and acts as a kind of damper to take the 'shock' out of engaging the clutch a bit sharpish.

It's a spring loaded beast which transfers it's torque smoothly to the drive train, in essence the DMF takes all the punishment first.

:arrowu: Your dead right Captain, in fact my mechanic said he could convert my flywheel to a solid one, it would just take a bit of trial an error getting the fitment right from another model and mating the clutch of course.

Imagine that in a few years when someone came to work on it again :?

i think valeo do a conversion, which uses a conventional flywheel, i hate dmf's, i driven cars that have had them and ones without and i can safley say theres bugger all difference in smoothness and gearchange, unfortuntatley you can only tell if it has one by removing the gearbox
