Chugging Citroen

This is about my mums xsara, She rang me yesterday saying her xsara was chugging, i had a look and it was actually making the noise, smoking quite a bit, the idle was going up and down.
I then tried to give it an italian tune up the road, but it went into limp mode and turned on the EML.

After plugging lexia into the car these were the codes that came back:


It looks like the usual HDi codes, just to check is the Intake air temperature signal the MAF sensor as i see that the wires seem to have been "worked on" around the sensor. And just to check where is the fuel pressure regulator is it on the pump or the fuel rail?

The diagram shows it on the HP pump, like a 406. Did you do the usual thing and clear the codes to see what comes back?

Hi Frank, I did a diag on my mate's Picasso Hdi90 with a suspected EGR fault ( engine kept cutting out ) and the Lexia said much the same as your screen shot.
I unplugged his MAF and so far so good.

Also, the wife's Picasso chugs like a pig when its cold, and is especially spluttery around 1500RPM ( hard to tell with no rev counter.. ) and despite plenty of injector cleaner etc it still spluttered.
I unplugged the MAF and so far so good.

There is a reoccurring theme here...

Is there any point to having the MAF sensor on these engines, the 406 had running problems a few years back, drove fine for about 3 months with it disconnected until i put a good one in, there were no noticeable running issues. I suppose a look at the egr would be worthwhile the car had sat for a year and my mum doesnt really drive it hard enought that it could get the cobwebs blown out

My point was, the EGR was fine - the MAF was the culprit for a lumpy tickover and cutting out when driving.....
The wifes Picasso still splutters a tiny bit, but not a patch on the whole engine shaking that was going on.

Is the IAT sensor part of the MAF, as it is on a 406?

In fact, I seem to have ended up with a PSA tech doc for EDC15C2, no idea how or why (although I tend to collect this sort of crap in case I ever need it) so now I'm wondering if it would be useful if I could get it to Frank, er, somehow.

VII - AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (1310)
The air temperature sensor informs the ECU of the temperature of the inlet air.
Warning: The air temperature sensor is incorporated into the air flowmeter.
Role of the injection ECU depending on the information received:
• to regulate the temperature of the inlet air by operating the inlet air heater throttle
control electrovalve.
Note: When the air temperature sensor (1310) is faulty, the ECU uses a
replacement value of 50°C.
Note: The information from the exterior air temperature sensor (6415) located in
the door mirror is used by the ECU to perform comparison tests. The exterior
air sensor is controlled by the front RH door station (9050).

Your file is already compressed incredibly well. Even our magic compression formula can't make it any smaller. Sorry.

Ah, cheers for that. I thought there'd be a way to do it but the last time I tried to find somewhere to host a pdf I ended up having to sign up to a load of sites that turned out not only completely useless for what I wanted but also thought it was ok to email me with pointless junk for months afterwards.

Thanks for that, well after unplugging the MAF sensor i havent heard anything back about the car.
