Possible BSi/ecu fault

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Possible BSi/ecu fault

Post by richard9140 »

Hello all

I am looking for some help with my 03 406 2.0hdi

A couple of weeks ago it died as I was driving and wouldn't restart, after being recovered, it started a day or so later and then died again. I purchased a PP2000 tool from ebay and read the fault codes, there was an intermittent short on the fuel pressure regulator fault plus various BSi faults. I changed the fuel pressure regulator for a 2nd hand one and the car started but then died again. Looking at the faults on PP there are again various BSi faults relating to harnesses, speed sensors etc. After reading some posts about corroded connectors in the footwell i checked these - all clean and dry!

I am now a bit stumped - the car now won't start and there are no engine ECU faults, the immobiliser light is not on so I am thinking the BSi is faulty ?????

Anyone any ideas before I give up and send the car to scrapyard heaven??

Hi there. Umm, without all the faults I'd say LP pump...

Any chance you could post the faults? It might jog some minds.

right here goes:

BIS Faults
1. Intermittent fault, absence of communication with engine management ECU
2. Remote intermittent fault vehicle speed information. Incorrect value received
3. Remote intermittent fault vehicle longitudinal acceleration information, incorrect value recieved

no 1 seems to be a likely culprit but clearing the faults has no effect. The alarm ECU is also showing no response on PP

This is highly unlikely to be a BSI fault in my opinion. Sounds like fuelling, so check LP/HP pumps, pressure regulator. Can you hear the LP pump running when key-on?

Crank/cam sensors can stop the ECU fuelling, but would usually log a fault code.

Those BSI faults listed I've seen on many cars - if they're all intermittent, they're unlikely to be the issue.

Could it be something as simple as the fuel filter?

It could be as Lozz suggested, as when the sensor gets too hot it can cause issues.

Its a 110

Thanks for all the quick replies. I did change the fuel filter recently and just changed the inner filter rather than the whole housing, I have done this before without issue.

I'll try a BSi reset first as its free!!!

Have you got a reasonable cranking speed? - ecu needs to 'see' 60RPM before it will trigger the injectors.

When you look at 'ecu condition' via PP2k, does it say 'unlocked'?

Is crank / camshaft synchronisation OK?

Are you getting a warning light or MFD message indicating the immobiliser is active? (also worth checking you get the audible warning the key's still in if you turn the ignition on then off with the door open).

Yes, new battery and starter replaced recently with one from breakers

Will check this one in an hour or so - just charging my old XP laptop - will report back

Don't know - how do I test?

No immobiliser warning light - I did have this at the start of my saga and resync'd the key using PP2K - the car then started and died after approx 1minute. Audible warning is there when door open and ignition is off
