I'm in the (relatively) gentle acceleration & low revs camp, myself.
In my experience, booting it begets more speed than you need and the resulting long coast doesn't seem to make up for how much it guzzled when you engaged warp drive......

I was always of the opinion that you should reach your intended cruising speed 'reasonably quickly' so as not to be on the gas for so long and to overcome the physics of getting the heavy car up to, and maintaining, a set speed.

If you have the Bosch pump, that's the one with the ufo on the top, why don't you run it on 100% veg oil. I've been getting it at Asda for £8 for 10 litres.

This works for the 1.9TD (from 1996 to 1999). It does also work for the 2.1TD, but you need to replace the Lucas fuel pump with the Bosch unit from a 1.9TD.

You should also be able to filter waste vegetable oil, rather than burning the pure stuff straight off the supermarket shelves.

I believe I'm correct in saying DO NOT TRY TO RUN ANY HDi ENGINE ON EITHER WASTE OR PURE VEGETABLE OIL, as you'll kill the fuel pump and probably the injectors too, and be seriously out-of-pocket.

Was reading an Auto Express article the other day which recorded that sales of new Petrol powered cars have this year beaten Diesels for the first time in 5 years. And we wonder why Petrol is now more expensive.

The article warned owners of large-capacity petrol engines to think carefully about long-term ownership, who? me? :(

In other news I'm still 'averaging' 30mpg which is blooming marvelous, sort of

Welp, I am happy in the knowledge that Mrs_CJ's "Swift" costs more to run in fuel costs than my 407...

You need a large capacity petrol engine to achieve those figures? My mighty 1.3l jimny is capable of recording sub 30's with sufficient provocation. ...... :(

I drive a 2.5L 5-cylinder Turbo petrol as my daily which has been known to enjoy petrol at an alarming rate (usually 25mpg) in its defense it returns rather urgent progress and a pleasing soundtrack.

106.9 in our neck of the woods, your soon-to-disappear Tesco Fuel Save would have cracked it here.

Unfortunately mine's more constant speed, variable noise. I'm tempted by and xud conversion kit.....
