"How much is it worth" and other questions

So my mum wants to sell her C4 in favour of a Volvo C30 (yes, another one). I would like to gauge how much she could realistically get for it.

It's a black 54 reg (2004) Citroen C4 2.0L HDI (136bhp) VTR+ model with 75000 miles on the clock, 5 door, 5 seater, 6-speed with half leather seats and JBL system. It's pretty loaded. The MOT is due on the 8th October. It has had a new turbo with all the associated pipework (because it was clogged up) a couple of years ago, original clutch and, I think, original cambelt. It might have been changed though - need to check the paperwork. There's a fault with the rev display above the steering wheel. Sometimes it works but mostly it doesn't.

She wants to get at least £1000 for it - is that realistic/too little/too much? Similar cars on Autotrader are going at over £2000.

Now, she wants to get a 2006/7 Volvo C30 with a "petrol engine". It's in quotes because I have no idea what engine is in it - she thinks it's a 1.6 but nothing beyond that. Only 32000 miles for £3000 (from a friend). Is it worth it? Any issues to look out for?

I would say £1K ish for an 11 year old shitrun is about right.

The Volvo pez engines are Ford units in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0L sizes. I've frequented the Volvo forum for 6 years almost daily (sad I know) and can report I've heard of very few issues at all with pez engines there only the diesel units have a *lot* of problems so definitely avoid if doing low mileages.

The electrics on the Volvo's are very reliable, mines been totally free of faults electrically, the only problems I've had are with the suspension (wishbones, drop links, top mounts, dampers, springs...all of it).

I'd say the C30 was a good choice, a nice solid thing with decent looks and carries its age well etc.

Thanks Welly. That's what I wanted to hear. Looks like petrols are generally more reliable these days. I am scared for something to go wrong in my 407...

The most reliable price guide is ebay as that shows the price they are actually selling for, you may get a little more on the open market if you are prepared to wait. Look at 'auction only' section and see what they have actually sold for, not what they are asking.

You could put it on with a reserve of what you think it is worth and if it doesn't sell at least you will know what the general populous values it at.

Part Ex you'll be lucky to get £500.
It's well worth trying to get it sold privately.
