Intermittent fault, speedo and mileometer

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Intermittent fault, speedo and mileometer

Post by ArJayAytch »

In my 1998 GLX TD the speedo needle (and mile counter) drops to zero, flickers to and fro, doesn't work for a mile or three then registers normally. This can be at the start of a journey or after some miles, and the problem sometimes reoccurs during the trip i.e. there is no discernible pattern. Nothing else is affected. Where do I start please?

Hi & welcome aboard. 8)

I think this one's been covered many times - have you tried searching speedo faults or similar?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Short answer: There are three possible faults, either the speed sensor on the gearbox, the speed sensor control box (D8) or BSI (D9) or the gauge cluster itself.

Try the sensor first, its located just above where the o/s drive shaft goes into the diff. Held in with one bolt + a connector.
