Volvo Question

Post by gumby6371 »

A mate of mine has just signed the paperwork on a 13 plate C30 1.6 diesel which I believe uses the Ford/PSA DV6 engine.
Does anyone know if Volvo also use the same Eolys FAP system or is there's passive?

Thanks as always

It's probably the same engine as mine, but I don't know anything about it really. I hang my head in shame.

...that's my coat there, thanks, bye!

Dai,

The Pug setup is turbo right at the front with DPF directly underneath it, airbox positioned in a really awkward to get at 'out of sight, out of mind' position right at the back of the engine.
Sound familiar?

It'd be easy to look up if it was PSA....

How about roll up at a Volvo dealership with the chassis number and ask?

That's what I did with the new yoyo, I just wanted to know when it should be serviced, stuff like that, so I went to a dealership in Zagreb where the nice lady kindly printed me off the car's entire service history, which I really didn't expect.

I don't really take much notice of all the groaning that goes on about Diesel engines on the Volvo Forum but as far as I know the DPF is cleaned* using a system that pisses diesel into the exhaust stroke of the engine to get the DPF all toasty. I don't think they employ the eoloys fluid stuff, but may have on some of the older 2.0D's.

If the dpf is right up close to the turbo, it probably won't need a catalyst.
Good* old Eolys clings to the soot and reduces its combustion temperature from 500 to 450 degrees, (then blocks the dpf since it doesn't get completely burned off itself).

Dai, next time I see you can I try your engine cover? Want to see if it will fit mine.

Yes any Volvo 1.6D, D2 or DrivE engine is a PSA DV6.

No, Volvo doesn't use Eyloys.

So Welly was right, they squirt fuel into the engine on the exhaust stroke. Via the sump :supafrisk:

It's called an auto topoff system ;)
The oil top up is caused by the fuel injected on the exhaust stroke being forced past the rings due to a blocked dpf. It will also throw a fit if the glow plugs die as it uses them to ignite the fuel it throws down the exhaust for the regens.
It looks like the same setup as a focus cmax and the older ones definitely use eolys. At least they put the air filter where you can get to it.

Thanks Dai and all for the responses, he's probably going to be 'losing' the Dpf/EGR and gaining a few more horses once the manufacturers warranty expires unless the VW fiasco tightens up the MoT even further.

Out of curiosity have they modified the sump plug location on newer models to avoid leaving all the crap in the sump on oil changes?

No they haven't. I'm not even sure they've fixed it on my 1.5TDCi (based on the DV6).
There is a modified one availible though or most people just drop the sump every few oil changes. Don't forget about the oil fikter in the turbo line too!

Speaking of the Dog's Vomit 6... A friend of my mrs' daughter wanted to buy a car, fairly new. What sort of driving will it do? Well, around town mostly, she uses the bus to go to work in Zagreb. Something like a C3 I suggest, definitely not diesel.

Shouting in the wilderness I was

It's parked outside, immmmaculate late 2006 VTR C3, low miles, half leather, steel grey. 110 HDi Domestic Violence 6. Argh! I've tried to explain but according to t'wife I think that every single last car that's on the road has something seriously wrong with it :(

Its only 'immaculate' and 'low mileage' because its been in the garage most of its life.......

Joking aside, they are good cars, as long as the oil is changed more frequently and the car is given some beans from time to time...

I think the Damaged Vagina 6 is quite a perky little engine, when it works.

That was my thought too. Apparently it has lots of stamps in the book (yeah, right) but I've suggested going to Citroen to see if they can furnish any further details.

Any recommendations? What about this dropping the sump every third oil change nonsense and the turbo filter?

I'm tempted to pull the filler cap and peer inside but I think I've done enough scaremongering already...

Tiny little car, 110 horses, yeah, I reckon it probably goes quite well

Oh, it has reversing sensors. Why? If it was any smaller I reckon you could lean out the driver's seat and feel behind it with your hand...
