Trip to north Yorkshire

Post by PeterN »

We have just returned from a very pleasant few days in the Yorkshire dales, visited 'Herriot', 'Heartbeat' and and ''The Royal', locations and one of our favorourites 'Beamish'. I thought you might be interested in our fuel consumption figures, the car is an Hdi 2.0. estate.

I know I need a new display, I have already replaced it once :? I think it reads 70.7mpg, 294 miles at 51mph. This was on the journey up from Dorset to Weatherby Services. As many of you will know once you get to north Yorkshire you are usually going up or down a hill - Sutton bank for instance, which will of course adversely affect the consumption, this was our average for the entire journey.

I think this reads 65.6mpg, 1175 miles at 40 mph, not bad for all those hills I didn't think. This was recorded at an indicated fairly steady 60mph except in the miles of roadworks on the M1 and A1M which was of course at 50mph. My sort of driving would probably drive most of you mad but it shows what can be attained with gently acceleration and braking and keeping to 2000 rpm or less.

That's impressive economy.

I couldn't do that even if I had the patience.

But how long was the queue behind you?

Just kidding, that is impressive economy regardless of how you achieved it - it puts a lot of modern cars to shame - I don't think I could get a result like that even if I pushed my car.....

I drove that area about 20 years ago, amazing landscape, and visited 'Heartbeat' area the same. I remember in some areas (I think it was where the 'Golf Balls' were) it was so hilly they had emergency pull-ins at the side of the road in case your brakes failed you could dive into these which had deep stones to slow you down.

We have been up there several times and the thing that strikes me about the dales is the beautiful way everything is constructed and kept. All the stone walls are complete and straight, likewise the barns and houses, most of the villages are picture postcard material and really look like that. We went to Askrigg where the house used as the surgery in the Herriot programmes is located, although it wasn't actually there but in Thirsk, but there was nothing suggesting they were trading on the association and Skeldale house is actually a B&B with no mention of its connection with 'All creatures great and small'.

There is very little traffic in the rural areas and many of the lanes are very slow going - doesn't other me of course  Its just lovely to be able to drive round them and soak up the ambience. Sutton bank which is on a faster section of road, suddenly presents you with a 1 in 4 hill as you round a bend and apparently is the scene of many stalled HGV's in the course of the year - that slows the traffic down.

For anyone that likes the country side and quiet I would recommend it. We usually stay in a Travel Lodge which can be had for £30 a night or less if you book really early, and has everything you need.

Beamish museum, much favoured by Fred Dibnah is a favourite of ours, especially if you are my age, most things look as I remember them in my childhood. It covers about 300 acres and has something for everyone especialy tram and train enthusiasts.

Claim to fame: Mrs_Welly and me stayed in the Holbeck Hall Hotel in Scarborough in the early stages of our courtship and had a very eventful weekend in one of the Bedrooms there

For those who don't recognise the Hotel name it literally fell into the sea a few months later. And we've been married 20 years this month :cheesy:

I'm glad you have lasted longer than the hotel :D We found the location of 'The Royal' from the TV series while in Scarborough last week. It's not a hospital but a block of flats and doesn't have 1950s cars parked all round it as in the programme. :(

Our Bedroom was the one just hanging in at the top right, below right was the dining conservatory with views over the sea, I remember Girlfriend_Welly was staring lustfully into my beautiful eyes over a steak meal, after all the walking we'd done that day.

It was a nice old place to be fair, it was a great shame it fell over as we'd have liked to return there for a nostalgic visit (minus the tea pot lids maybe) but hey-ho on-wards and, err downwards....
