To another 406, obviously

We've had Doggy's excellent 2.2 HDi estate for 3 years now, and the plan was it was going to have a relatively easy life. However, my father changed jobs and has thus put 60k on it on those 3 years, it's at 245k as of last week!

So we've made the same move and swapped to a lower mileage one in a bid to keep a 406 for as long as possible.

It's a 2.2 HDi Exec estate again, '51 plate, 114k on the clock.

It came with a dashboard that would put most Christmas lights to shame, but we're getting there on that front. Airbag connectors fixed, ABS fault found due to water ingress causing loom damage, overboosting due to a turbo EV vac leak (though there is another smaller vac leak that I've not yet pinpointed).

Seems like a decent buy thus far

Looks really nice, I agree it's the best colour for a 406, closely followed by Moonstone Blue.

They wouldn't understand. It's not ugly, the engine's the right way round, it doesn't sound like a tractor and it's not nearly expensive enough to run.


I'm currently torn between finding another lower mileage example, (mine's currently on 155k and rising), or pushing the boundaries and seeing if this one can manage a bit over another 4 years until I retire.

Swirl diaphragm was punctured.

Have bunged up its vac feed until the new one arrives and I have time to fit it.

Other outstanding issues:
- Exhaust leak from flexi (probably caused by bottom engine mount failure)
- Near side door card hanging off, need to get some clips
- Sill trim clips
- Few bits of interior plastic appear to have gone on holiday

I'm running with the swirl flaps permanently open - I did this since I do most of my cruising below 2100 RPM these days and it would never operate, but TBH if there's a difference it's hard to spot.

What became of the old one?

Yeah I've had the swirl flaps open on the Coupe for a few thousand miles now. I've got a new actuator, I just haven't got round to fitting it!

The old one has gone to krisb on here, who has done most of the mechanical work on it for the last few years anyway, so it lives to see another few years at least!

I've been flap-free for a year now with no noticeable difference apart from less things to leak vacuum.....

It looks a nice motor Jon, nice colour, nice spec, lots of er, 'issues' which I'm sure will be a walk in the park for a chap of your calibre

If you need any silly little inside trim bits, I may be able to help - sill strips and clips are cheaper from the main stealers..
