Did we have this one before? They're all starting to look a little familiar

There's a guy at my work keeps spotting that one & contemplating it, but he really wants an S as he doesn't want an SE. Keep telling him to go for it as the leather is really comfy, but he's determined to get an S as he had one before.

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s
The S would be faster, purely on account of the lighter weight front seats, the lack of a JBL amp, and the lack of a pump for the headlamp washers. There's probably at least a 50kg difference.
But I love the big comfy leather seats, and I love the sounds from the amp. The headlamp washers are a pain in the butt (I lost one of the covers once, and it was a total pain to find a replacement, plus the damned thing is always getting clogged).
The 2.2 petrol engine is a lovely thing, but is a bit more complex than the 1.8 and non-HPi 2.0 engines in the 406 range. The throttle body is also an odd-ball Magnetti Marelli system that is unique to this engine (read: difficult and expensive to replace as spares are hard to find). Same goes for the hose between the expansion bottle and the radiator - unique to the 2.2 Coupe, and no longer produced or stocked anywhere.

Surely you mean 5kg... The amp weighs as much as a dozen eggs, the pump as much as a car key, and I'll concede a couple of Kg of leatherhighlander wrote:The S would be faster, purely on account of the lighter weight front seats, the lack of a JBL amp, and the lack of a pump for the headlamp washers. Good to see you, mjb, haven't seen you post in a while! How's things with you?
I'm told the various motors for each of the two front seats make them considerably heavier than the manual versions
When MarkW had my front seats out for repairing the heating elements, they seemed to weigh an absolute ton
50kg may have been a bit overstated, though

50kg may not be that far from the truth. Having fitted both electric & non-electric seats I can testify that the electric seats weigh substantially more than manual ones. I can lift & carry a manual seat one handed, but the electric ones were hard work to get across the back garden from the house.highlander wrote:Good to see you, mjb, haven't seen you post in a while! ah ok I forgot the cloth seats were manual, and there are some pretty torquey motors in play. Still nowhere near 50kg though
Bought a house earlier in the year, son's still a royal pain in the arse, work's gone nuts, but at least my V8 bimmer still works. Although I haven't been able to drive it in a month. Which is good because that's when the MOT expired
Got it booked in tomorrow. Can't see it failing on more than brake pads / handbrake, but let's see eh?

Busy, skint, tired, and recovering from a nasty bout of bacterial tonsillitis with added ear infection for extra fun, which followed a non-stop run of cold, man-flu, and another coldhighlander wrote:Good to see you, mjb, haven't seen you post in a while! How's things with you?

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s
That looks like some heavy wear on the edge of that drivers seat for a car that hasn't done many miles. Reckon it's done a lot of very short town trips, so whilst the mileage may be low, it's had a bum slide in & out of the car probably as much as one with 100k on the clock.steve_earwig wrote:
& Matt - you really need to lift a 406 electric seat. They're bloody heavy. Off the top of my head, the only other cars where I've removed elctric & manual seats are Mk2 Mondeos & e39 BMWs & I'm sure the weight difference wasn't as bad in those. Not sure if it's the weight of the motors or all the other extra metal on the seat frame in the 406 ones, but they really did seem ridiculously heavy by comparison. Maybe somebody could chuck one on a bathroom scale next time they have them out & we can find out for sure?

I reckon that has potential. Good service, deFAP & a new bumper (probably cheaper to buy a matching one from a breaker) & it'd be a potential classic.

Does look nice. Shouldn't it have a battery cover?
Then there's cost of getting the crap off the windows, (the back one looks particularly 'professional').

Re: Ebay Etc. Just "Run-In" 406s
I reckon that's a shitter.
In my book* there's only one reason a seller takes pics of wet paintwork - cos it's swirled and scratched to buggery.
White wheels, gangster tintz, trim missing from the seat rail and other random sh*t missing *alarm bells*
Also the mileage is strangely low, just checked its MOT history and it's had a lot of ABS and braking failures. Looks like it stood idle for 2014 too......
Verdict: I'm oot

Funnily enough the paintwork stood out as abused to me because it's wet, but the water is sitting on the bonnet looking almost soaked into it in the way that it only does on paintwork that hasn't been polished in a long long time.
Still reckon it has potential though. Maybe just not quite worth close to £1k as it is though.

I too think it has potential:
Potential to be turned into baked-bean tins
