Car Insurance capers - need some advice

Post by Welly »

Right, so, on Saturday I go to collect a new car for MIL. Went to add the car as a 'temporary additional vehicle' to my own policy but they won't let me because the 'new' car is not registered in my name. Fine so I'll drive the new car under my fully comp allowance to 'drive other vehicles' albeit under third party cover - NO - can't do that because the new car must firstly have insurance cover in its own right.

Not ready to swap MIL's insurance to the new motor as we need a two-week overlap where the new car and the shitrun can both be used.

Sooo, I managed to speak to MIL's insurance and they're putting me and the new car on the her policy on a temporary two-week addition for £35.00, that's ok.

All this leads me to another issue: when my missus takes possession of the shitrun then her Astra will be laid up on the drive but uninsured. Have I got to declare the Astra as SORN whilst I try to sell it? something about continuous insurance? and then what happens when someone turns up wanting a test drive in the Astra? it's gonna be untaxed (maybe) and uninsured.

Sorry I haven't bought/sold a car for years

I think that most insurance companies now offer this temporary overlap facility either cheap or free to deal with just such eventualities, so you might be able to go for that on the ashtray.

As far as the sorn goes, I believe you're right, if it isn't insured you'll have to sorn it. It's a right PITA to be honest. Once again too many fukwits driving around without insurance ballsing things up for those of us that sell one car privately every decade. I guess people just take a chance with the test drive.

If it's on your drive you can continue to tax it, or you can sorn it. tax is apparently void as soon as it's sold though

As for insurance, if someone wants a test drive, let them - as long as they can show you a comprehensive insurance document covering it (i.e. dayinsure / tempcover). If they're not willing to pay £30 to test drive a car, they're not a serious buyer anyway.

Not sure if cars on your drive are legally required to be insured nowadays. I'd immobilise it though...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Let me know if you're interested, I'll get some pics up, we've had it for 8 years and it's tidy compared to most.

Shirley with the tax continuing it's assumed the insurance must also continue, which it won't be in my case. Who knows anyway? do they send teams of inspectors out in the dead of night or something?

Let me know how much you're looking for it and give me a few pictures to show Becca and we'll go from there!

Not quite the BMW we were after but I know it's been well looked after.
