Rusted water pipe

Post by Dribs »

Nearly lost my car last night.

Turns out I have a hole in the metal pipe that goes between two rubber hoses from the engine to radiator (see attachment).

Online searches are not being helpful and I need to know what this is called.

Also, how easy is this to replace on your own, or will I have to take it in?

Trying to beat the sunset...

This is still a 1997 2.9 petrol?

I'm hoping it isn't 1343 P5 'cos they're NFP (obsolete)

'97 2.0l petrol. It doesn't seem to have that small pipe off the centre though, but it's hard to see.

60 quid? What do you want?? I was expecting 5 times that (they were something like that from Pug)

That is, if it is the right pipe...

D8 2.0 petrol 135 bhp manual with air con? It probably fits a few but that's what I searched for.

As for fitting it, that'll depend on how good you are with the nut rounders. I would point out that it's got that weird shaped metal tube in it because clearance between that end of the engine and the inner wing/chassis rail is minimal...

No Aircon. Would it still be the same part?

Manual? I guess so but...

Oh bollocks, it's different, you were right about less hoses:

Hmm, looks a bit clearer...

Nothing on ebay for that part :(

I'm wondering if you could use it anyway and just block off the extra pipe. Not sure about the radiator connector though, it looks like one of those push fit jobbies on the air con but a normal fitting on yours.

Ah the infamous bottom rad hose. Right knuckle skinner of a job getting that bar steward out!
Have a look at the con-rad (push fit) connection on the rad. The metal corrodes and expands cracking the union on the rad so worth checking before you take it all apart.

As lozz has already said, I would drain the system wire brush / sandpaper it & then repair it it situ with JB weld or
chemical metal both would make very effective repairs. Just make sure you leave it for 24 hours to fully cure before
refilling the system.

I am having no luck finding this part.

It seems to be a blanking pipe for the non-AC version, so could it simply be replaced with some 30mm steel pipe? Would it have to be attached to the bracket?

It looks to me like the pipe is rusting out where the bracket attaches. I've no experience of JB Weld but it might be possible to clean the hole up and fill it. I'm not sure if this could be done in situ...

Just revisiting the ebay part, I suspect this is a pattern part. Here's a huge picture of probably the same thing - http://panel.propars.net/upload/b74976f ... 1bb5a4.jpg

Looks to me like there's one extra metal pipe running from near the back.

Also, the horrible connector which Teamster mentions is only on the air con version, yours just seems to be a normal jubilee clip. I'm just wondering if there's enough hose there to cut the connector off and use it on yours. You'd have to block the smaller pipe somehow of course.

Jb weld is brilliant stuff.
I've used it many times and its done what it's says it does on the tin.
Personally I wouldn't remove the pipe.. You might end up worse off..

There is an old car shop near me..who seems to keep hold of old/ new stock parts for older motors
I will give them an ask if they've got one if you want..
Or I can forward there number too u ..

Years ago when I did a spot of club racing, everyone in the paddock had some JB weld in their toolbox,
I have even repaired a rodded block that would have been scrap with the stuff, you can even machine it :cheesy:
